Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Silca has had similar things for years. Some of the hardcore IM types would inflate their aero wheels using non-removable-core extenders and then remove the extenders.

Today we found an injured motorcyclist off the road while we were climbing a canyon road. It was weird how it happened. We planned to go up that road but my friends wanted to detour to a coffee shop on the way, so we did. While there, moto rider pulled in and I started a conversation with him before we left. He asked where we were going and we told him Aliso Canyon. He said he had come down Aliso and lost his friend somehow, said he had been riding around looking for him. He asked, half jokingly, if we would keep an eye out for his friend.

So I watched for any sign of a moto crash on the way up but not really thinking about it much. My one friend and his wife stopped for a nature break so just 2 of us kept going. My friend who I was climbing with started talking about turning back but I shamed him into continuing. Finally he stopped at a turnout he has used as a turnround point before the road gets steeper. We were talking and I said I wanted to go further and the motorcyclist heard us and called for help. It was the other guy's friend and he was badly hurt. He was probably there at least an hour when we found him and he could not move. He asked for water and I gave him one of my bottles. He had trouble doing it but he was able to drink.

There is no cell service in that area so my friend went back down to try and get a signal. Ended up knocking on the door of the first house he came to and the lady let him use her landline to call 911. In the meantime I flagged down a motorcycle rider who came by and he said he would ride until he could get a signal and call. I was probably there 15-20 minutes before that moto rider came by. Several minutes later one car stopped.

Eventually fire and sheriff showed up and called in a life flight to take the poor guy out of there. We left when the helicopter was landing. I think if we hadn't stopped right there, the guy might still be there. There was no way to see him from the road, even standing 20 feet away and looking at him I couldn't really see him because of the brush. His bike was next to him but it was very dusty from sliding through the dirt and from the road it didn't look like much. There is no way anyone driving by could have heard him.

The whole thing was very disturbing and I'm trying to tell myself that we did a good thing but I still feel awful. Here is a pic from last year when we turned back at the same spot. It's a turnout that leads to an old fire road. Right behind where I'm standing to take the pic is a guard rail. We think he overshot the turn and clipped the guardrail on the outside with the left side of his bike and body.
Maybe it was dumb luck, or maybe someone/something was nudging you along, but you were where you needed to be at the right time to bring rescue to someone who badly needed it. Props to you for taking action that made a positive difference in someone’s life.

i had a great ride planned today. got up early, breakfast, bike ready to go.

2 miles in, all roads which lead to the golden gate bridge bike path closed. escape from alcatraz triathlon. about 100 park service officers to make sure nobody snuck across the COMPLETELY EMPTY roadway which would be part of the course in an hour or so. very frustrating.

turned out, rode off randomly towards the south, ended up having a decent ride of the same length (84) but some crappy highway miles and nowhere near the scenic value of the country roads up north. first world problems.

I didn't really do anything. It was amazingly lucky that we stopped close enough to hear him because we couldn't see him. When I flagged down the motorcyclist I told him we needed to call 911. He got off his bike to look at the crashed bike and said "We need to find whoever was riding that bike". I told him the rider was right there, next to the bike. That's how hard it was to see the guy.

It was drizzling here when I got up so I drove to Santa Clarita to ride on the bike path. It was dry there and I saw my friend and former LBS owner who was running. He's been an ultra runner as long as I've known him. He's training for an 80 mile run over the Tehachapi mountains. Cray cray. Anyway, chatting with him for an hour made me feel better.

This has been the WINDIEST Spring I can remember here. Certainly the windiest since I started riding. Today was just nuts. I'd go from having a 10-20 mph headwind to having a 10-20 mph TAILwind, to having a 10-20 mph CROSSwind, all in a couple hundred yards without varying more than about 30 degrees in direction of travel. SHEESH! The crosswinds were the worst, because they were like 10 gusting to 30 in places, so some places where I just let gravity take me, I ended up braking to stay below about 25 mph because above that the bike would start wandering when a crosswind hit.

I've been riding bikes with frame pumps for many weeks that this morning, when I took the Canyon, I didn't even think to grab a minipump. 7 miles out, I remember this. After dithering for a bit, I decided to just roll the dice and risk the wrath of Mrs. GeneJockey in case I flatted. But I didn't. I need to get me one of them CO2 inflator wallet thingies and just take it on all rides no matter which bike I'm on.

Without wanting to open the can of worms about people's opinions of it here, it is deeply amusing that to get high-power CBD oil in Boulder, I have to order from Austin.

This is the project. Taking half of it back for a pool. The whole thing used to be a pool, except the wrap around, but we didn't use it.

The dividing wall was already there, but with flow through holes. Those got plugged, as well as some other ones we found later--- they were hidden under the last six inches of water, that it didn't appear necessary to remove. The bottom holes were discovered while netting fish and moving them into the wrap around.

I saw some of the Floyd's Sportscream at Dicks sporting goods here. Perhaps if that sells well, they'll stock other items in store.

I did get to ride today. The wife, driving home from the city, flatted about 40 minutes away by bicycle. 103° heat and sunny. DaBrim came in handy. The light headwind helped too. It kept me from broiling.

Whew, dodged that bullet. Although sitting in on a federal trial might have been interesting...
