Man, your niece could set up a short, personal tour through that place, I know a few people who would love to see it. It's probably too late, but I could imagine Eroica 2020 having a pre-pre-dinner set up there.

Just don't tell the owners Gugie was riding a Super Course back in the 70's. They'll think he's loaded and automatically double the price.
Geez, I didn't own my first cro-moly frame bike until the late 80's. I'm ashamed to say what I was riding back then, but it sure wasn't high-end English Raleighs.

Ya know, I was 15 at the time, and I fed a hell of a lotta bales of hay that summer to save up for it. My friend Butthead Bob got a Grand Sport for his birthday without lifting a finger. His family was clearly loaded.

It's just those Raleighs were super-expensive in 1970's dollars, so a person had to be either rich, or an extreme cycling fanatic to spend what a middle class family survived on for a whole month back then for food, housing, everything, ... for a bicycle? I knew lots of rich kids back then, but no fanatics to that degree, so I assumed the former. Those were strange times though, certain things actually cost more then than they do now, like home appliances, TV's, and vacuum cleaners. All of that stuff was made in USA back then, with union labor.
How did a 15 y/o kid even get the idea that a Super Course was worth that kind of money? I never saw cycling on TV, or even any cycling magazines. I saw my first guy on a road bike wearing wool shorts around 1973, in Alamo CA, on Danville Blvd. Even though I rode my Stingray clone every day, I laughed at the guy for spinning the pedals so fast. "How does he even get anywhere?", I asked my sister, who was driving.

If i had to guess my first CrMO famed bike was reynolds 531. (Technically MnMo steel). this was back in the mid-seventies. I cannot for the life of me figure out how i knew about 531 in the pre-internet age at 15, but there you go. it was one of those special Free Spirits. If i had to guess, with my moms employee discount, it must have been at least $150-175 (?). all on a 50 home paper route salary! next bike was a viscount and upwards from there. I loved the viscount so much that when it was stolen, i replaced it straight up with another. seem to remember i had that for the first year of college because i guy i met at the bike shop in that town, would tease me that it was a Varsity even though it was lighter than his Paramount!

When I was 13 my sister and her husband came out to the ranch to visit and had two 26" steel rimmed his and hers Montgomerey Ward 10 speeds. She asked if I wanted to go try them out, so I got on my brother in-laws bike, she got on hers, and we went out for a 3 mile bike ride. Man that thing was fast! Compared to my American Eagle (pre-Nishiki) Sting Ray copy, that is. A year later I had saved up enought to buy a 27" wheeled steel rimmed Montgomerey Ward 10 speed. I found Bicycle magazine at the super market. My mom got me a subscription for Christmas.There was a Schwinn store in Madera, maybe they had a World Traveller. I drooled over the Paramounts in the catalog. My mom would drive to Fresno maybe once a month for something, I talked her into stopping by Big Wheel on Blackstone (@straightblock, jump in and correct me if needed). They had half the 1974 Raleigh lineup in the shop. There was the magic number decaled on many of them - 531. I had to have.
If I were to calculate it out, each 120 lb haybale I fed to a bunch of hungry heifers that summer put 2.3 cents in my pocket.

My mom would drive to Fresno maybe once a month for something, I talked her into stopping by Big Wheel on Blackstone (@straightblock, jump in and correct me if needed). They had half the 1974 Raleigh lineup in the shop. There was the magic number decaled on many of them - 531. I had to have.

Your memory is good. Big Wheel has been closed for a long time, but the sign was still up in this 2009 street view archive screen shot. It came down a year or 2 later and nothing else has ever gone in there. The liquor store and pool hall are still going, probably 50 years or more.

Niece indicates she did attend an event there but it was a private event through the family that owns it. The owners are very private and dont rent it out or give tours (although it is just an empty building).
I’ll probe some more when I see her Eroica weekend. Wish it was better news.

That can't be double butted Reynolds 531, at that price. Plus I'm sure Sears would have mentioned if it was, even if no one knew WTF that meant (as if that ever stopped them before).

Oh yeah, the bike was a piece of crapola for sure. but it was a step up from the first bike i ever bought (Varsity, as far as weight and performance). and it started me down a healthy lifestyle for the rest of my life.

Okay, color me frustrated on the verge of angry. First, the new registration portal isn't working for me - the e-mail they send with the final step link comes to me devoid of any content at all save the to/from/re line info. I have already sent an e-mail to the Eroica California folks asking for help, but has anyone else had this problem? If so, have you been able to resolve it?
Second, have they moved the start/finish? The website previously had the rides starting and ending at Leffingwell Landing State Park, just north of Cambria. I reserved a room at a motel very close to that park for maximum convenience for me and my non-riding wife. Now the route maps show a very different start/finish place at the east end of town. The website is also amazingly silent on exactly where the events take place. In years past, the website was very clear as to exactly where stuff was happening; suddenly, crickets. Anybody have the skinny on what's going on?

I did have a problem with the My Eroica page, my registration (done last year before ME was launched) did not show. They figured it out, in response to an e-mail, but it took over a week. The web site is kinda clunky.
Am wondering when we'll be able to sign up for the dinner. Anybody been able to do that yet?

I didn't have any trouble registering a couple weeks ago. But yeah, it does look like they moved the start on the route map = maybe this is just for people who are driving in the morning of and need a parking space?
