"dating" isn't the same thing as "successfully finding a mate".. plenty of people find their partner without ever "dating"

LOL, I was just being a little sarcastic. The truth is that our choice of transportation has nothing to do with finding a mate. My grandparents have never owned a vehicle in their life. And even my parents didn't have a car till I was about 7 years old.

The wife and I have been happily married for over 2 years and regularly go on dates. Having sold my car last summer, I would say that living car light has not inhibited our opportunities to go out. We are lucky to have a lot going on in our neighborhood and have easy access to the Metro. I will say, however, that with a baby now on the way, my wife is much more reluctant to go out on the bike. As many others have said, it all depends.

I doubt that I'd have trouble finding someone to "date" in LA if I were an eligible bachelor. Finding like-minded people is easy with the Internet nowadays.

right but what is relevant to this thread is people dating, not people who have partners. the thread isn't "has being car free made it impossible to find a mate"

Met the car free husband in smallish town Minnesota. Continued car free relationship in Portland, Salt Lake City, and Madison. I plan on keeping him.

I would think with the unhealthy lifestyle people live today, someone who rides everywhere is going to have the advantage of being in better shape then most guys, I'm sure this isn't going to go unnoticed by women

Do you think the Captain Morgan comercials go unnoticed by women as well? I wonder how many of those healthy looking Victoria Secret women notice a cycling commuter? A friend of mine just came back from Atlanta and told me about the Havana Club. I wonder how many cyclists are in this pictur? https://www.urbanspoon.com/rph/9/1244...ub-group-photo

Just jerking your chain, the media may present dating differently from the OPs question. Living in LA I know it is different. My Daughter just got back from going to Vegas with friends and the pictures she sent us showed more about what women notice than what we as parents might "wish" they did. Plus how many of the women that you might hope notice are cyclists? remember spin class at LA fitness doesn't count.

I have a lady friend that knows I don't have a car/drive, living car free is not helping, but eh it's my choice! She tells me all the time I need to drive. I'll just enjoy the ride.

Hell my dating life sucked before I decided to go car light/now car free. I didn't meet my current GF until I went car free, and she doesn't drive either

Make up your mind about the appeal of car free men to women.

In one of my literature courses in college, the professor pointed out that the reason there was almost always a lady in a wheelchair character in Victorian stories was because she had had a riding accident. The leaping-head on sidesaddles used for hunting basically set the rider up to get their pelvis and lumbar spine crushed if the horse slipped and fell.

I'm pretty sure that's the only way I could ever be in a serious relationship. Maybe two sides of a duplex or something.

Being 16 and knowing how to take apart my road bike and put it back together has made relationships a lot easier... I can take my wheels off, lower my stem and seatpost, and fit it out my window! the ultimate freedom machine. Room is on the first floor, of course

It may depend on where you live, but here in Seattle, owning a car or not is irrelevant as far as dating is concerned. If they like you, they don't care if you have a car or not. (They pretty much insist that you have a job and a place to live, though, and that you know how to read...)

I doubt very much that having a car is irrelevant to the dating scene in Seattle. More likely the women who will not date someone without a car are either lying to you or are not aware of their bias themselves. We are all a product of our environment, few effortlessly shrug off a century of indoctrination.

My impression is that this matters more to men than women, actually. But surely it can't hurt.

Have you ever been to Seattle? Driving a car here can be a huge PITA. The culture is very bike-friendly. People have enviro/green pretensions. People still judge you based on material criteria, but, for most people, cars are not part of the equation. They'll judge you based on the neighborhood you live in, but not on whether or not you have a car. In fact, I'm willing to bet that owning a low-status car in Seattle (e.g., Chevrolet Corsica) is far more of a dating liability than not having a car at all. Personally, I've had periods with cars and without, and it seems to have had absolutely no effect on my relationship status one way or the other.

I don't care what 99% of women think of me, I only care what my fabulous GF thinks of me. Given that she is more bike mad than I am...
