Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wish I had power data from when I was at my best. That said, my race weight was 160-162lbs, so climbing was never a strength for me. However, even now, I can still put out a peak of 1100W+.

Supposed to rain all weekend so I decided to ride today. Sick of riding around cars and it's chilly and windy so I took the mtb. It was already drizzling here so I drove across the valley to ride in the Santa Monica mountains. 25 mile drive which took an hour. It's not often I drive in workday traffic since I retired and it still sucks.

20 miles on the dirt with 3100 feet of climbing. A little mud, some ruts, and a few other riders out there. No rain and I had a fun ride but I'm pretty tired now, so if it doesn't rain tomorrow I'll get hammered by the group. Won't be the first time.

Taking The Boys to Disneyland when they were 6 and 8, we learned that the Smith Boys don't really do really wild rides.

This spot wasn't too bad but others were (deep soft snow and deep shoe-stealing mud), gonna have to avoid this trail for another couple weeks.

Lunche - Lunch etc

Looks like I might have some actual science on my plate in coming weeks - analytical method development for surfactant analysis in various matrices. Usually I just plan other people's task lists, make approvals, design things etc. I mean that's still sorta technical but its one step removed.

I'm at my desk too much man - I always look for reasons to get in the lab. Hopefully this comes to fruition.

"Hey, you're really good at the bench! How about if we give you a job where you'll spend less time at the bench and more time doing tedious and yet emotionally fraught work like managing other people and doing budgets?"
