Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was not aware of that. Maybe I am wrong. For what its worth the Jenson gear advisor said they are not compatible with 6780/9070 derailleurs.

As far as I know, the shifters are just buttons and can be interchanged...the derailleurs are a bit different.

Thanks a bunch for the references. Picked a pair myself and also got 5 bucks off for being a new customer.

The 6770 shifters work with the 9070 and 6870 11 speed components but you must have 11 speed front and rear derailleurs. At one time you could even get away with using a 10 speed front derailleur but the latest firmware updates removed that option.

Nice, are you picking up spares or putting together a new system? If your putting together a new system, wait for Performance to have another $50 off $199 or more sale like the one they just had. You can get the 6870 11 speed derailleurs for $149ea and the internal battery with charger/interface for $165 then you just need the junction boxes and a few wires to make it work. If done right and at the right time you can get a full Ultegra Di2 group for around $650-$700 and once you ride electronic you'll never want to go back.

Thanks for the info. I have a function Ultegra 6800 on my primary road bike. I would love to put DI2 on it but dont want to spend more than 500 bucks (in no hurry either). Now that I have the shifters for 50 bucks, I am left with 450 bucks to spend on the rest. Besides the 6870 derailleurs what else will I need?

It may be doable at $450 but you'll have to be patient. Here's a list of the other stuff needed and although you'll more than likely use Ultegra 6870 components you can also use the 9070 Dura Ace components too.

Front Derailleur
Rear Derailleur
Battery
Charger
Front Junction Box
Down Tube Junction Box

E-tube wires as follows;
L shifter to junction A
R shifter to junction A
Junction A to lower junction
Lower junction to battery
Lower junction to front derailleur
Lower junction to rear derailleur

Got it. Thanks. Just picked the 6870 front and rear derailleurs up from PBK for $240 (they have some discount going on today for their 17th anniversary). Gotta find the external batteries, junctions and cables cheap.

Nice Find! Double check that the external batteries are compatible with 11 speed, I'm not 100% sure on that?

Will definitely look into it. However, in case its not compatible, I doubt the frame I have is compatible with an internal battery (I dont want to drill holes for cable routing). Will I be able to mount an internal battery externally?

It wouldn't be hard to do, but it may look odd.

I know someone who mounted one in his steerer tube.

Only problem was he had to recess the star nut waaaaay down and had to use a threaded rod to re-tension his stem/headset whenever he needed to take off the stem.

He ran the cables just like external ones from there.

Looks like it's no problem to use the external battery with the 11 speed system, plus you can use the cheaper SM-EW67 front junction box. The internal battery requires the use of the newer SM-EW90 front junction box.

EDIT: Deal is over. Ended at midnight. Back up to $11.

Nashbar has Boeshield-T9 for half off. I've never seen Boeshield this low. Four ounces for $5.49. Buy 9 bottles to get free shipping.

Boeshield T-9 Drip Lube 4oz.

Nice little vest with three rear pockets on sale. I know it being Cannondale may be a deal breaker for some but thought I would post anyway.

nashbar has 25% off any single item including bikes. It puts the carbon 105 bike at $915 shipped. Does it get any cheaper than that?

Nashbar has 25% off any single item currently. Which isn't that unusual. Typically when they do this they raise the price of the item so really it costs the about same amount. However when I looked at the website this morning they had not yet raised the price up to acommadate the 25% off. Or at least not on the CR-5 road bike. Currently the site shows it for 1750 plus 25% discount. When I put it in the cart it wanted to show the price at 2,000 minus a 25% discount. Called them and explained and she honored what the site showed. I got a full Ultegra carbon 11spd road bike for 1,327.48 shipped. That's unheard of for a full Ultegra 11sp carbon. If you are interested I suggest acting fast because I suspect they will change the price back to 2,000 pretty fast. Be warned though some of the sizing on their bikes can be a little screwy.

I got the same price but it's not a carbon model, but other than those cheap brakes it looks to be a great deal. I'm seeing $1665 shipped on carbon/Ultegra model.

My order was definitely a carbon road bike. CR-5= Carbon Road 5. I agree the brakes are not the best but, the rest is all Ultegra. I could replace with Ultegra brakes for not too much. $1,327.48 shipped to the house

Gotcha ya, I was looking at the closeout bike section. $1327 IS a HOT DEAL price for the CR5!

How much does the CR5 frameset and those wheels cost. I picked a full ultegra 6800 groupset (52-36 172.5 crankset and 11-25 cassette) from PBK for $470. If you add the cost of ultegra brakes, the total comes to $1372+$~80 = ~$1450.

Are the frames and wheels together worth ~ $1000? (This is a serious question. I am not very well aware of nashbar branded products).
