Just sit near the front for the first few laps, initiate a move with like 3 or 4 guys early, stick the move, win. Then the only sketchiness is your little group. But, I don't think it will be too bad. Ask @caloso a day or so before for a scouting report since its in his neck of the woods.

I meant in terms of pavement/traction. I want to do couple races in Februray/March to see how new training plan progresses. I just don't want to have my front wash out on some wet leaves and braking my colourbone before the season even starts.

It's a mile from my house and I've done it wet or dry. Leaves shouldn't be an issue. The Davis kids usually do a good job of sweeping the course. One year it was so rainy that I didn't have to go to my bottle, just open my mouth and drink from the spray off the tires in front of me. (Disclaimer: don't do that, there are lots of ducks and geese in the park so there's sure to be bird poop in the spray)

Are there any weeknight crit training rides in the Bay Area? The Ardenwood lap featured in the Early Bird series seems to be a good one, but do people train there during the week?

Wasn't bad last year, but that was a 2 man break from lap 1. Can't be worse than Oakland GP last year where half the cat 3 field crashed out over the course of the race!

it's a business park... not sure if it's deserted enough for that... once the season gets going proper.. I think Team Fremont and SJBC have training crits during the week.

Yes, the SJBC Tuesday night crits are decent if you can make it, I usually do.

Doesn't start until May though: San Jose Bicycle Club : : 2015 Twilight Crits

Team Fremont has a training ride on Thursday nights but it's not a full on crit. Mostly drills, form sprints, scratch races, etc.

There's also the Port of Oakland ride, or POO.

If you're free for lunch riding, Tuesdays and Thursdays there's the Alviso Noon Crit.

Thanks for the info, guys. Looks like SJBC and Team Fremont are organized and have fees. For context, in SoCal people regularly ride laps around the Rose Bowl or Hughes Park for evening training and I am wondering if we have something similar here. The Port of Oakland Ride, Golden Gate Park Ride, and Alviso Ride sound very close to what I had envisioned, though the first two are difficult to get to after work and the third is only during the day. Ardenwood business park appears to have potential but I guess people only go there for Early Birds.

While not crits, the Valley Ride & the Spectrum ride are both basically simulated road races that cost no money.

Valley Ride is every Weds during daylight savings time, Spectrum is every Saturday year round. Details are on the Norcal group ride link above.

You should do the noon ride, valley ride, spectrum or something anyway. the more people the less likely the cops are to give us all a ticket.

Hey @hack & @caloso - what's a decent warmup route at the Folsom course? (that's not the bike trail or the main/busy road)

Doing the masters & the p/1/2 with 2 hours in between, got some time to kill.

How far/long are you looking to ride?

If you just want space to ride, you can take the bike trail a couple miles down to the canal where you'll have an empty, flat maintenance road all to yourself. It's boring, but a good place to put in some riding.

Aside from the canal, you've got to put in about 5 miles of city streets or bike trail to get into some open roads.

Here's a strava file that goes past the crit course (more or less) and down to the canal. Canal starts near the fish hatchery on the other side of Hazel.

Someday. My wife usually works weekends so it's a big ask to be gone for 48 hours. That, and not owning a TT bike.

We only have 3 or so guys going up this year. I'm stuck in meetings all day Friday and will be in the 35+ field as a result. Might even drive home between days ... it's only a couple hours anyway.
