Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We typically climb Sullivan Ridge up to Dirt Mullholland, and then decide where to go from there. It's probably going to be best to stay on the beach side of the range. Backbone Trail from the Hub to Will Rogers would be nice, but it's REALLY overgrown right now.

That's part of the problem going out there. There is construction on the Ventura highway (freeway) so the freeway is jammed and all the alternate routes are too. Add in billions of people trying to escape the heat. I can actually avoid most of the mess getting out there but it's still an hour+ drive.

The route I was thinking is all fire roads but a lot of other places are overgrown. I did it a couple weeks ago and it wasn't too hot until the last climbs coming back.

I haven't been on Backbone since all the rain so there might be new ruts, etc.

I haven't been on Backbone recently, either. I got the report from my buddy. A couple of other folks I know have said the same thing.

My last SM ride was almost all fire road... https://www.strava.com/activities/9327474593

The next town over, 3-4 times the size of Tixkokob, has two tire shops that I was able to find. At the first one, the tire guy had yet to show up, at 11:00, and it was a hole-in-the-wall. The second, which has Bridgestone in its name, has no tires of that size. And the woman was grinning when she told me that. Motul used to be a pleasant town, the place I would always go to avoid going to Merida. I'm going to have to re-think that move. It was clogged with traffic. It has recently been given Magical City status, by the federal government. If that moniker won't ruin the ambience, I don't know what will. But I was able to get the wet/dry pvc cement that I wouldn't have been able to get here, so not a complete loss. I can finish that project today. If there is a way to buy a tire and bring it home on the bus, that is the option I'd choose. But I don't think it can easily be done.

Left ankle is a recent innovation, like 2+ years.
All mine are on the left. Knee, shoulder, eye, foot, in the recent hotel injury

Let me guess! The top one is dry season(summer) and the bottom is rainy season(winter). Living in northern California I enjoyed both looks equally.

DIngDingDing! We have a winner!

Yes, it's one of the things I love about riding the same routes all year - watching the changes.

Repair completed. I opted for a dip in the pool rather than a third shower.

Dry season here, fittingly, is the season of death.

I have a ways to go to catch you and have 9+ years to do it. I'd rather your list be longer. This isn't a competition that i want to win. Sorry.

Just looked up the side effects of one of my antibiotics, Bactrim, on the Mayo Clinic site.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight, especially between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., if possible.
Well, crap. I guess that means no IRL ride on Sunday.
