I got a late start today, which put me out during the mid-day heat, humidity, high heat index, and air quality alerts.
It's no wonder I started getting a headache and feeling ill. So I wrapped up a short 70 minute ride and headed home.
For the rest of the day I am staying in air conditioning and drinking lots of fluids.

50 Miles, another day, another strong headwind. But it wasn't as strong as two days ago and it was on flat ground, not climbing a mountain. Beautiful day, warm and blue skies. Stopped at my usual place to eat 1/2 an energy bar, I was overcome by the beauty and truly felt so very lucky to be alive and able to experience such beauty and exceptional weather.
This is my view 2-3 times a week when I stop to eat 1/2 an energy bar. View is the same to the left, up stream. That's the Dashutes river about 400' below.

Early morning ride twice around Jekyll Island (40 miles), almost no one out at 7:00, so I pretty much had the entire island to myself. There’s a small historic district where JP Morgan and his buddies used to come to unwind. Interestingly, America’s involvement in a World War II put an end to it, and now it’s a beautifully kept museum of sorts.

After a day of rejuvenating and hydrating, I got out early to beat the high heat index. Got in 2.0 hours.

30 miles today, mostly on a Forest Service road called the Natural Turnpike - most of it deserted. Went partway up the Lincoln Gap Road, which supposedly has a stretch billed as “the steepest paved mile in America”. Hope to try it one day this summer when no one’s around to see me tank.

Woke up yesterday morning and had a bit of a twinge behind the knee so I opted to play it safe and not ride. This morning, everything felt great and I was set for a nice 60 mile solo ride. After the first 25 miles, I realized it was just to hot to so 60 so I settled for one of my usual 40 mile rides.

This afternoon: 95 degrees, feels like 104 degrees. So, out for a 22 mile, one-and-a-half hours, two bottles of water ride. A/C back at home feels great.
Forgot to mention warnings of high ozone levels in Indy today.
I think it's less of a problem out away from the city where I was riding.

I finally got back on my bike this week after three weeks off due to some kind of infection or virus. I had a fever for two weeks. I'm getting a little stronger every day. Hope to ride for an hour tomorrow. Rode 12 miles today in 55 minutes. Slower than usual, but this thing really knocked me out.

Tour de Fronds, XXI
Saturday, June 16, I rode in the annual Tour de Fronds in Powers, Oregon (first time for me). Our son and DIL have ridden the TdF for several years now and encouraged me to ride this year. We took the shorter route from Powers, out and back to Daphne Grove, on paved Forest Service road. There is very little traffic (weekends) on this road, but ample road support was provided for the event. The week before he ride, the weather prediction was for temps in the mid 80's. Fortunately that was pushed out a day and we had perfect riding weather - except for the first 10 miles, where we rode in drizzling rain and dripping trees. I was one of few who came prepared with a waterproof jacket, but disposable ponchos were provided for riders. We had 6 adult family members, one teenage grandson, and two toddlers in our group. Next year we hope to have more.
The ride was amazing. A few long climbs, but we all managed, even the 4-yr old on a trailer bike and my DIL towing a 2-yr old in a trailer. I did some serious training for the event. Rode a Specialized Rockhopper, swapping the Ground Control 2.1 and 2.3" tires with 43cc Gravel Kings. 16 miles out and back for a total of 32 mi. The route is beautiful with old growth forest on one side and the beautiful Coquille River on the other. We made a couple of side trips: rode out to tour the Cedar Bark House and made a short hike up to Elk Creek Falls. Enjoyed abundant snacks (actually a feast), old-time fiddler music, cowboy coffee, and visits with fellow bikers at the Daphne Grove rest stop. Returned to Powers to a meal of lasagna, green salad, garlic bread and desserts, all home cooked by Powers community members.
If you get the chance, plan to participate in next year's 22nd annual Tour de Fronds - always the third Saturday in June. This well organized fund raising event, fully supported by volunteers and sponsored by the Powers Lion's Club, has rides for every level - 32 to 100+ miles on paved and paved/gravel routes. It is well attended by locals as well as road bike groups from Oregon, California and Washington, with riders of all ages. It's a great way to experience the beauty of Oregon's forest and the unique rural community of Powers, once a booming logging/mill town. I haven't heard the final count, but this year's event had the most participants ever, probably over 200 riders. Check out the website for info and Tour de Fronds on Facebook for pictures of this and past years events.
Next year, I'm thinking of maybe tackling one of the pavement/gravel rides - maybe

The westerly winds brought in dryer air lowering the humidity a little. My jello legs didn't seem to care as I rode 2 hrs, 7 min.

21 miles total commuting today. The ride home: About 94 Actual and 104 Feels like but only (!!) about 50% humidity. Loves me my insulated Polar water bottle with a couple of inches of ice in the bottom.

Not today, but Saturday 2 days ago. Rode 25 miles. Only been back in the saddle for a year after a 20 year hiatis. Did some personal bests

This may not sound impressive to some of you but keep in mind I've only been back for a year. I'm 63 years old and my ride is an '84 Peugeot PH10 bought new in '85. Not too shabby IMHO for an old guy and an old bike.

12 miles is my commute to work this morning and every day, 40 minutes, all on bike paths, 60 degrees, would be 95 degrees,when going home no humidity, life is great when you can commute to work on bicycle,

Did one of my typical, 40 mile, solo rides this morning. It was hot but nothing like it's been the past few days. Had a decent breeze for most of the ride.
