I'm not sure if I've ever seen this to be the truth. Braze on FD clamps generally have quit a bit of vertical adjustment.

Probably less of a problem when 34/50 cranks became more common. When 39/53 where the more typical crank it could be an issue. Is why there are adapters made to lower the derailer if needed.
