Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My first Pfizer shot last Thursday left me useless on Friday. My second is on 5/6. Not making any plans for 5/7.

I had the same irritating noise from a back wheel. One tick every revolution. Sure sounded like spokes. Finally found that it was the wheel bearing.

While waiting for Mrs. Peel's front wheel to arrive from Poland (currently "Inbound Out Of Customs" - since Sunday early AM), I've been looking at older Dura Ace wheelsets on Ebay. Seems as if a whole lot of them are for tubulars. I gave some thought to this, since as far as I can tell, the Lotus Supreme shipped with tubular rims in 1982. But discretion is the better part of valor. Best to stick with what I know,

I never raced with tubulars, and I wouldn't do a long ride without stuffing a few in my pocket. But I put an old tubular wheelset I built on my Cannondale (version 1 ? ), and it went from my worst riding bike, to maybe the best.

I can say that for my PDG Paramount as well. That is one stiff frame! The other bike I've had them on is a full sp Trek, and I wasn't nearly so impressed.
I'd been running 27mm Open Pavès on it and it was nice, but the tubs are much nicer.

There is a REASON why there are so many "near mint" or "gently used" tubular wheelsets on ScamBay. They are a major hassle. Don't do it.

So you're saying I SHOULDN'T go for the set of 4 wheels with correct-age Dura Ace hubs, but tubular rims, all for only $250?

Seriously, though - I KNOW what to do if I get a flat with a clincher. Tubular? I presume you tear it off the rim and replace with another pre-glued, pre-stretched one you have in the tire bag slung under your saddle? Then what do you do about the one with the puncture? Surgery?

I tried to repair a pricey tubular once in the 1980's. It did NOT go well.

These seem to be the choices to me, I choose the second:

I think most folks that run tubulars nowadays either put some tubeless sealant inside the tube preemptively or carry some with them to put inside the tire if they get a flat hoping that it will seal.

If that doesn't work, what you said.

I'm not deep enough in for having had to repair one yet. Lots of folk are using tubeless tire sealant in them, either before or after the puncture. As long as you have tires with removable stems.
I've done fewer than ten rides on tubulars. But I plan on trying the first method at least once before throwing in the towel. I also glued them on, rather than using tape. I want the full experience, if I'm going there at all.
Edit: And on this note, I no longer use any electricity when woodworking. Except for lights and fan. It's much more satisfying. Just the way I'm cut out.

There's a place in Florida where you can send them for repair. Something like $8 apiece.

Actually I take one of these when I ride the tubulars: Edit: Haven't had to use it yet so I can't comment if it works.

Shortly after my shot today, I experienced slight nausea, just enough to make me seek out an early lunch. After getting home, it was a 1.5 hour drive each way, I was pooped and took a nap. I don't know that I can blame the vaccine, we have to get up early and I got poor sleep last night, but I wasn't going to turn down a good excuse for taking a nap.

I'm shot T+27 hours and feel fine

Still sore in my arm and I'm a bit achy, but nothing to really complain about.

More like $26, but that's cheaper than a new tire.

I just get one of my co-workers to help with uber-stout bikes like the Rad.

Daughter's first HS softball game of the season today. They are starting weeks behind most other teams in the league, and already have a 0-2 record due to forfeited games from last week. Despite being a weaker team than last year, I expect today's game to be a lopsided win. Their opponent is REALLY bad. My kid has been on a hot streak with her bat with her travel team (farthest ball I've ever seen her hit in a game last Saturday - approx. 260'), but today's pitching is expected to be really slow, which she tends to struggle against.
