For us, a loaf of bread is either consumed in less than 4 days or it's a nearly complete loaf that's thrown away when mold shows up.
On a related note, I think that the quality of peanut butter can and should be measured by the number of days a jar lasts. So far, Justin's PB with Honey is in the lead, but PB&C Bees Knees is close behind.

Always good to hear a fuzzy doing better! The ethics thing is a rabbit hole - there's often a homeless guy in the retention pool behind the church we're next to. I'm sure he'd love to have my furball's food. When it's time for my next car, which is likely to be a 4Runner, I'm sure there are poor people in town without cars who would do way better if I got a few of them some old beaters and got myself a used RAV4 instead. And on and on, until you think about giving everything away and going to be a monk.

What kills me is the vast amount of food that gets wasted daily by restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, etc. Awful. There's got to be a better way.

France requires large grocery stores to donate unsold food rather than to let it spoil and write it off. The US does have organizations that collect and distribute some unsold food before it's too late, but there's still a huge amount of waste (something approaching half of what's produced). You would hope that we could find some inspiration and do better, 'specially considering all of the harm done by producing these vast amounts of food in the first place.

Travesty is the word that keeps jumping to the fore.

Than again, if we were to count the food going in to the maws of already-obese Americans, it would probably push the food waste beyond 50%.

But yes, just thinking about all the produce that I wouldn't pay money for, but would take as a handout if needed. It just gets tossed into a dumpster. I'm sure the organized homeless communities probably figure out the schedule and take advantage accordingly, but it would be a heck of a lot better if they didn't have to dumpster dive to survive.

I try to compost all our household waste whenever possible. And the leftover meat goes to the dog. There's something about wasting food that bothers me to the core.

Yeah and, when you start composting, it's amazing how much less you're actually sending to a landfill (where it'll never see a chance to decompose and provide useful nutrients in our lifetimes). Minneapolis just started city-wide organic waste composting (so now we have waste, recycling and compost bins); hopefully it'll go to good use and even more will follow suit.

It's shorts weather in the morning!
Unfortunately it's also drizzling.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Hey guys, remember this thing?
Yeah, so it's been like that since December. But the trailer pulling has put the fire back under me and I even PUT SHIFT CABLES ON IT last night. Wow. Hopefully tonight: the chain and maybe the brake cables. I'm hoping to get it at least rolling for a nieghborhood test this weekend. I'm very reluctant to throw any money at it, but I would like some different bars and to totally rebuild the wheels on it. As it is, the rear is just barely usable.
The awesome thing is that I found the brake lever I pulled of of my MIL's bike when I put some integrated shifters on her bike. They were much cleaner and they had a Campyesque quick release built into the lever. That is going to be handy for undoing the Canti brakes when needed.

Hotel catering is the worst. I sat through a boring lunch meeting in a Chicago hotel once thinking about this. There was food there for 50 and only 20 attendees. Same for the breakdast meeting that preceded us. Think about a convention week in Chi. How many meeting rooms. How many meetings. How many hotels all over town. The waste could literally feed a small city.
