The main problem with a socket is that most of them are deep enough to allow the cassette tool to slide freely outward unless you secure it by some other means (skewer, guide pin, etc.). I get around this by stuffing a wad of shop towel into the socket to fill the empty space and allow me to keep some amount of inward pressure on the tool. I often press the wrench/socket/tool against the cassette with my knee while holding the wheel and wrench with my hands.
