Happy story of the day:
I just saw a new-to-me-patient, a 2 year old dog who is 4 weeks post-op.
The owners/dog live outside of LA but they were travelling with the dog up in the Sierras. They had rented a truck and the dog was riding in the back seat. The electric windows on the truck operate in a different manner than the owner's truck at home and he meant to partially open the window. But inadvertently, the window opened all the way.
The dog jumped out the window of the car at 60 mph and was hit by a truck.
Terrible injuries- paralyzed from a dislocated spine, also a major head trauma with an ear avulsion (a wound that occurred such that his ear was almost torn off his head), and on top of that and injury to the cervical spine that turned out not to need repair.
The guy gets the dog to the nearest ER and they triage the dog. At that location, the closest place he can go to try to help the dog is the vet school at Davis. Off he goes, and 10 miles outside of Fresno, he gets pulled over for speeding.
The cop approaches his car and is pretty POed. Then he sees the dog and the owner tells him what is going on and he changes his tune.
The dog got a police escort all the way up to Davis with the cops radio-ing ahead to pass the guy on to the cops in the next jurisdiction. They made it in record time.
Everything went really well- the spinal dislocation was fixed, the ear was sewn back on, the head trauma has resolved nicely and the neck injury did not need surgery. Dog is walking now and happy as a clam, still pretty unsteady but still getting better every day.

(sorry, Im playing catch up) Ive been wanting to share this with you guys, and since the discussion has turned to law enforcement.
I too am generally not a fan. Around here they kinda tend to be a bit too gung ho.
For instance, 4/29/17 guess who received a ticket for interfering with traffic? (same as impeding)........ That's right, good ole ls01.
Cops have a tough job to do, I hear it all the time. Then why do they go out and pick on a soft target like me? Pulled over, for riding my bicycle in a traffic lane. one cop, two cops, three cops, the third the watch commander all with their lights on. Crime of the century!
But, conveniently for me , all 3, yes 3 officers, one of them a lieutenant , failed to notice my knock off go pro that was recording every word. the part I like best is when the Lt. reads me some printed cycling law and his explanation that meant I had to ride in the parallel parking lane, and weave in and out of the cars. But it also recorded where and how I was riding prior to being pulled over and every idiotic word if his explanation.
was I co operative? Hell no, why would I be? I wasn't breaking any law, he had no probable cause to stop me. but here we are. To be honest, I was livid.
So I ended up with a lawyer who is a bike law Attorney, cyclist, and cycling advocate, who took my case pro bono. His Father, who is also an attorney and cyclist and cycling advocate, came to court twice to argue with the prosecutor that I was right and the cops were wrong. The prosecutor actually said, " I cant believe the legislature expects me to slow down for someone riding a bike". ffs.
2 years earlier my attorney set a pretty large precedent. He defended another cyclist against a pretty crabby state trooper. They ended up having to appeal the lower courts decision to circuit court to get the law defined. He won the case. we used my video and the rulings made in his previous case to get the charges against me dismissed. If you google cyclist verses Mi. state police. you can find his case. It took 2 trips to court, and the explanation that we fully expected to appeal the decision to a higher court. And that he would end up with a monetary fine (its what happened in the previous case), to change his mind and dismiss the charges.
So the day after I won my court case I went out on a celebratory ride through Grosse Point Shores, out to Belle Isle, and back. Its a 62 mile round trip. at mile 61.1 I met a Buick. on the bike path.

Generally they tend to pick more on the homeless guys, on the assumption they'll have more trouble lawyering up.
I hate it, but I've given up trying to get the local "advocacy" org to fight it. They're useless, except in the pursuit of grants and fundraising.

From prior posts, he means "squashed by" but can't say yet due to resulting incident still processing through the courts and his lawyers advice.

Ive been taking it for my fingers since last summer. I have to admit that I think it has helped. I was a complete skeptic but I cant argue that my inflammation is down and the pain is a lot better.

...the local constables here in the Big Tomato do that "outside the bike lane" crap all the time when there's an "enforcement" week or month Doesn't matter if you patiently explain the California code to then.

Did a maiden voyage on the new Canyon. Frame seems to feedback to any kind of energy you put through it (in a forward fashion). Carbon fiber frame (first carbon anything ride here) feels dead as road kill, in an impressive manner, yet doesn't feel right.. The difference in comfort between this and the alloy is astounding - no road buzz, no grin and bear it over the pot-hole. I would've done entry level carbon sooner had I had the data point of a test ride.
That said, when I was on the alloy Synapse I was thinking oh man 30-32mm's because it's a bear over some of those awful roads.
On this I'm thinking.. what's the fastest 25mm I can throw on it? Corsa G+ came up in a thread somewhere on the 'net, not sure if GP's are still the gold standard for speed and weight though. Frame is doing the work so the tires don't have to.
Now I need this hamstring to heal (kickball related event, pulled it hard / probably tore is since the entire back of my leg was bruised up and down) and we'll hit some 75-80-100 milers since I see that as a reality now in that I won't be as torn up at mile 60.

That said, I run 23's at 70 up front and 80 in the rear on race day, on 25 wide rims, and have no issue. (165-170 in real money, not sure what that is is in that weird metric thing) A 25 could easily do the same out on the road, further enhancing that Rolls Royce ride you speak of.
Corsa, GP, S-Works Turbo, for speed, with less durability.

As I was hitting the hard road at the end of my morning off-road ride(I'm liking it more every day), I passed a campesino cutting firewood for the kitchen. He saw me and called me 'Donal'. According to our housekeeper and her friends and neighbors, Donal is the devil incarnate, and is directly responsible for the hurricanes, earthquakes, personal ill health and bad luck. Simply because the devil is now present in the flesh. He might yet meet his end at the hands of the black magicians of the world.

I don't know how the road are there, but beginning shortly, the roads turn to crap around here. Debris fields are amazing, and it's like whole cars exploded on the side of the road. Along with the usual gravel and stuff the weather kicks up, it turns sporty. Durable is the word of the day now, is all I'm saying.

I'll toy with something soon, and remember to pack some spare tubes if it goes awry

Edit: But I thought the same thing when I put Open Pavés on one of my steel bikes.
