My 8' is .88 based on a 20 minute test today. The 8' was outside on a long climb, the 20' was on a trainer. I'm guessing outside I could have done better.

I need to back off intensity for a couple of weeks and focus on duration.

that's more of an issue of mods being trigger-happy than one of the thread's relative relevancy.

Low ftp in a road race is tough unless weight is also very low.

Even at 135 lbs and very fit I couldn't climb that well. At 105-110 lbs but not as fit I got shelled quickly.

We just had a similar discussion here at work. A perpetually fiscally irresponsible older person wanted to reduce withholdings to a minimum so that he'd have more take home. It seems like a bad move to give this person more control over their finances.

Anyway my feeling on withholdings is that I understand my limitations and I'm better off with a decent withholding rather than paying the whole thing quarterly. I also have auto-transfers each month into various accounts so I don't have to do it consciously. I've learned that I seem to live within my perceived budget and if I hide some of it I save more.

Therefore I understand the self-ban thing.

I belong to a motorcycle racing forum. It's pretty much what you would expect it to be like in the cold pits at a race track. Pretty much anything goes except outright attacks and nudity. The mods let threads snowball for their own amusement. People beg for a thread they started to be closed on occasion. The politics and religion subforum there tolerates everything except personal attacks.

I too don't understand why Trollheim is allowed to exist here, but it's not my forum, I don't make the rules, and I don't post there.

I only did 1 20 minute test last year. It was on the road, and I used that to estimate a rough FTP number.
Do most people do it on a trainer to eliminate all the outside variables ?
I was using a PowerTap last year, but not in a very structured way.... just logging output during training, but not doing much with it.

Damned if you do. Damned if you don't. I think I could put out better numbers outside, but I live in very rolling terrain so it's hard to be consistent over 20 minutes. My VI today was 1.01. My VI outside is usually greater than 1.2. But inside on the trainer I think the numbers are artificially lowered, but I don't know by how much. Heat, static positioning, flywheel size, etc. all seem to reduce the watts a few percentage points.

I do it outdoors, always the same 1.25 mile loop - same loop as one of our weekday crits.
This means I can do all the comparisons - speed/hr/power/cadence/etc. I do most of my other solid intervals here because there's no where else I can do something without stopping for stoplights.

It seems to me that the 8 minute test is too heavily dependent on your AWC to really be of that much use to determine FTP. Having said that, for general fitness work, it's probably close enough to get going on and it's easier for inexperienced people to wrap their heads around 8 minutes of work rather than 20.

i would like the answer to this too, i'm in the process of getting myself a powertap, and i cant see how i could go "all out" on the road around here, seems like you could put much more focused on a trainer, or even rollers?

What if you want to do it, but shouldn't?

Think about it this way, when you're racing, where are you? On a road right? So by riding on a trainer you're taking away variables that exist in real time. The point is to find a flat-ish patch of road. If you can't then realize that you can pedal hard on the downhills.

All of mine were on rolling hills (out near guilford). That's the only place where I could hit it hard for 20mins without any stop lights, etc. I love that patch of road.

Realize that the bumps and flat patches aren't confounding variables, but variables that help you get closer to the 'real world' than is possible on a trainer

I have a 10 mile stretch of road I used last year for the 20 min that's basically a slight uphill, with a few shorter steeper sections. There is one traffic light though, so it's about 50/50 chance of green.
