I am trying to talk my wife into a tandem tadpole recumbent trike some day. I think Cattrike makes one and has an option for each person to have their own gear selection. So you aren't tied into the same cadence.

I help build and ride a "Trandem". We took three bike frames, cut them up and welded them back together to make a 3 person bike. We rode it up and down the street a few times for fun.
