Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The ride was very good. Nice weather. Over 3.300 feet of climbing over 100km/60 miles. On-bike average of 18.7km/h.

Next up is an imperial century ride in a fortnight.

I've finally shaken the 13,000s. Tipped over the 14,000 mark with a post in Living Car Free, that simply said QED (the OP very amply showed my theory that many of the posters in LCF are not exactly healthy was pretty close to the mark).

It's an old but good story.

I went to an auto parts and tool shop yesterday to buy a new oil pressure switch for the van. The original switch has a broken terminal, and there appears to be an oil leak around it. I specified to the sales guy that I needed one for a 4M40 turbo motor, a Mitsubishi spec.

Then he asked if I might be interested in buying a genuine Mitsy turbo. Well, not really... the turbo isn't really the issue with the van; it just needs a new head which is coming in the next two weeks. Then he mentioned it's been in stock for around four years, was ordered in for someone who didn't collect it, and despite the retail price of being over $2,500, I could have it for $350.

Hmmmm... if I am going to replace the head, injectors, and glow plugs, to go with the new radiator, hoses, and timing chain and tensioner, I might as well get the turbo as well. And if it all goes pear shaped, I can still sell the turbo on eBay, I suspect, for somewhat more than I paid for it.

So just before we went for a bike ride yesterday, I went back to the shop and bought it. There is something nice about new car parts... the way they feel and look.

After working the cross race in the rain and cold all day, I couldn't stay awake last night and went to bed at 8:00. So, I wake up at 4:00 AM and realize that with the ending of DST in the US, it's really 3 AM and I'm wide awake. It's going to be a long night.

BTW I only have seen a few innings of the World Series but it sure seems the Royals are the better team.

You guys sure get a lot of fortnights. Thet's the second time in two days. We never seem to have any of those around here. Maybe you should have your calendar repaired. Whilst you still can.

Poor Astros. So damn close to rolling the Royals up and tossing them in the trash. And then that freakish inning.

I figured out what to do with my extra hour. I went for a run. Running is still stupid, but at least it did not cost me as much time.

I just completed my first 15 mile ride! A pittance compared to the distances many of you cover in a single ride, but I'm making progress! That's what I did with my extra hour!

Hi,

I'm new here and I'm getting ready to get my first rode bike. Should I get carbon fibre, aluminum or steel? Should I get disk breaks or rim breaks? Finally, what size bike should I get?
