I've been lurking in this thread, as I live downstate in Bloomington/Normal. I should have come to the swap; we went to the Cubs game instead, and they lost.

Where are your priorities, man??? You could have saved the money you spent on tickets, beer and food, and spent some of it on bike parts (or bikes). You could have even checked in on the game on the tube from time-to-time.

People asked for photos. You will have to use your imagination, but here are a few.

This is where people sat and talked about bikes.

This is where we had several bikes on display.

This is where people loaded and unloaded their stuff.

Good thing we had it yesterday, eh?

Thanks to Skip for putting the li'l event on! Not a whole lot of selling went on, it's true, in fact I didn't even take my stuff out of the bag I brought it in. But the companionship was great, and I was especially glad to (finally) meet RobbieTunes, one of the first people I became friends with here on BF about ten years ago.

Hope to see many of the same folks at iab's ride in two weeks! (Also hope for much more temperate weather than today--brrr!)

It really was great finally meeting the guys for the first time. This was my first bf gathering and could not have been better. You read a lot about how friendly they are, but now I know first hand, they really are. Here's a few pics I took.

Only two. Sharing was fun too but that was done mostly for ferrying swag.

Don't specifically recall that chat, but thank you. The Bates is mostly either completely not noticed or strongly derided when it gets out. The positive responses are very few and very welcome.
The Bates will be out on the road again this season. Got eclipsed by the Carré last year and that will be corrected.

Thank you Skip for hosting a great event. I haven't lived in Chicago is several years, the gathering was a chance to catch up with a very good group. I'd like to invite everyone this summer to Lake Geneva.

I managed to find a freewheel and seatpost that I have an immediate need for. I managed to sell about $300 in parts. I was also happy to give away a few items to good homes.

Probably 3 years ago on St. John in Highland Park. *I think I was on a red Battaglin.

<....snip...>

Very cool!
The curvy English bikes don't get much recognition nowadays.

edit: is that a Cantiflex version? i.e. larger diameter tubes at the center? also very cool!

Thanks for hosting, Skip. It was great to meet other BF members. I was happy to walk away with a 7 speed FW to experiment with, too.

You missed the negotiations on that Epic. Trish initially offered $50. Someone talked her down.

Grown-up in Chicago and lived a few years in Dallas, I think Chicago and Milwaukee have a unique history in eastern and central European ancestry, with the tradition of many styles of spicy sausages having come from the various Old Countries. For the generations before me hot dogs and sausages were common street food, eaten often in brief breaks of a mobile working day. I saw the same habits in Vienna, Austria, Salzburg and Prague, Czech Republic. Somewhat remanent in Munich, but mostly moved indoors. I grew up with seeing hot dog stands in most Chicago neighborhoods. Among the best ever in Chicago is (still!) Superdawg, on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. It must be seen, not just eaten. In contrast to Dallas, Dallas is dog-challenged, but Chicago doesn't have much Tex-Mex (but a lot of real Mex!!!) or nearly as much good barbecue, brisket in that nice, unsauced Texas style. I can't say much about other southern 'Que styles, but I have been schooled that they are all unique.

I think Portillo's has decent products, but they weren't there in the day, at least in my neighborhood.

Brightleaf pink dogs, they definitely were not.

Being from Wisconsin and 47 miles from Oscar Meyer, I always thought there was a huge chasm between a hot dog and a bratwurst. Wasn't until I had one from a cart in DC that I realized there are "other" hot dogs. Portillo's was the best I've had in a long, long time, maybe ever. Had a salad bar on it, I think, which is likely where the heartburn came from...

I still have some of the Italian beef, and the catering lady gave me an entire loaf of bread, so I've got that too. I bought a whole roll of Saran wrap to make sure it stayed fresh.
