Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome exchange down at the park this afternoon:

BMX kid: I'm gonna walk my bike across the sand because it's too sluggish to ride through that.
MTB kid: OK boomer.

Did my longest ride to date today. 35 miles. Felt great, wanted to go further, but I ran out of time. Usually I’m granted only an hour to ride, which kind of limits how far I can go.

Kudos. For my purposes, an ideal ride is 45-65 miles. But any real miles are good miles.

my goal was 40, and I only had 2 hours so I knew it would be pushing it. But in the last 30 miles I would be feeling it, today my pace didn’t slow down at all, Never felt tired.

Nice! I've found the ideal ride distance to be 33 1/3 miles, so you overdid it by just a skosh.

Oof. That's rough on the time limit. A one hour ride would be pure desperation for me; between getting prepped and showering, etc afterwards, 30 miles is about the minimum that's worth it, to me.

Typically get 20 miles in the hour ride. So I don’t mind it too much, but I would love to do a 50 miler.

That's about my preferred range, too. After that, I get too tempted to push it to 100. Centuries are great, too, but only once or twice per year.

Centuries are fine, but usually I find something starts to hurt or fail around mile 85, so the last 10-15 miles are usually not much fun. YMMV.

I get it right at 80. And I feel so good at 50!

Given all of the changes I've made like the 650b wheels and high offset aftermarket fork, I can't really call it a 716 anymore.
But you can still call it a beautiful old Trek. Mine is Ishiwata, a tubeset I had wanted to try. Still haven't ridden 531

I am currently in recovery mode from a 64 miler when I was in shape for much less. A neck and shoulder issue

Everyone's different, but north of 20 mg/day it very well could impact your sleep. If we see you posting at 3 a.m. we'll know why.
