Very good point, I too hadn't thought of that. That being said, I like my Sekine, but not $20 like, but if I did, that is an awesome way to do it and about what I'd probably sell them for if I had a supply.

This one is a mid-1970s Sekine SHS and was firmly mid-range for the era. It's easy to mistake for a lower model as the OEM downtube shifters have been replaced by stem shifters and ti also appears that the OEM aluminum rimmed wheels have been replaced by steel. However, that's Sekine's doubled butted CrMo frameset. The giveaways are the chromed stays and forged rear dropout with integral hanger. As it sits, it's about ~$300 in Toronto. Add $50-$75 for all OEM. Stem looks like it's ready to pop out. It's far too high. I can determine the exact year via the serial number.

Thank you! Got it for my wife, did full refurbish and loved the ride! I am slowly falling in love with Sekine's! She did not like it (likes her MTB and rides it once every three years :-)) so posted it for sale in Toronto. It was in pretty good cosmetic condition but BB, brakes, heaset needed full cleaning, new grease, etc.

I'm trying not to forget all the Sekine stuff I've learned, need a quick refresher every summer. We still need some old Sekine Canada workers to come out of the woodwork...

Another Sekine has crossed my path (came in with about 5 other road bikes). Not quite as nice as my previous one but I'm sure after a rebuild, it will be a very nice bike. The freewheel is locked up (as the others) so I'm guessing it lived outside on its side. Will have to work my magic on it, can post a finished picture if anyone cares. The SN on this one is: B 1 5562

Shamano Thunderbird front derailleur, cotter cranks, will need a new chain and as I said, the freewheel is locked. Dork disk also needs some love.


My previous Sekine had a Lark SS derailleur, this one however has an Eagle. I've never had one before, not sure if its OEM or a replacement. Stamped dropouts say lower end machine.


Serial number stamping, pretty clear this time.

Turbo231, your latest acquistion appears to be a circa 1976/1977 Sekine SIU/SHA. It was the base, adult, lightweight model. An Eagle rear derailleur is OEM. During this era, the Larks typically came on the SHB/SHC, which were one model higher.

I sold a SHS 271 earlier this year for 275 it had a Shimano Crane RD and the half chromed fork and rear stays, it was Champion Butted tubes. It was a nice bike but not really a fast bike, seemed to not like to accelerate so it had to go. It was nice just not my cup of tea.

The Sekine SHS and it's slightly upscale sister, the SHT, were Sekine's mid-range models. The geometry was close to, if not the same as their entry level models and they were a bit heavier than you'd expect, which would partially explain the sluggishness. The only truly responsive Sekine during this era was the SHX, which had much tighter geometry and a tubular wheelset. Even then, the steering was a bit vague and they benefited from a good replacement fork.

I think I weighed the bike at 26 pounds and some change, it wasnt lightweight and it wasnt heavy either. I can tell you one thing, the lugs were very nice and the paint was kind of a pearl white and that was nice too. But like you said the geometry was not great for going fast or turning fast. It just felt muted on the road, if it had a more aggressive geometry I probably would have kept it.

Hey everyone, this is my first post on bikeforums.net. I was reading through this thread, and I thought I'd throw in my two cents. I recently traded bicycles with a friend. He got my Bianchi 12 speed, and I got his Sekine Medialle SHX 270 with full Dura Ace. It was missing the rear derailleur and the front brake, so I threw on some newer Shimano Exage parts because I couldn't find the old Dura Ace matching components. I was hoping to be able to ride it, but the frame is definitely too large for me, so I will have to sell it. Does anyone know what the value of this bike might be?
