I remember watching that one on eBay. I bought mine as a frame with some parts. I have no where near the $1800 being asked for the CL Trek into it. I'm not an expert, but I've never seen a chrome fork on any example I have ever seen. Sounds as if the seller is being vauge about its originality.

I also did not know that Trek made a TX900 without the fastback seat stays. That looks more like a 930, but the serial number is a TX900 serial number. Maybe it was transitioning from one model to the next?
Your TX900 is too big for me. I watched that eBay auction (it ran multiple times, if I remember correctly) just to see if and for what it sold for. Nice bike though.

Serial numbers sometimes can throw us off.
We have a few fellow members on this forum whom worked at Trek. They've greatly filled in the blanks and our curiosities. Its also known that early on, employees in some departments would sometimes (and encouraged) to make their own frame. Santana is another that allowed the same.
Also wouldn't rule out a return frame in for repair warranty and Trek sent a new replacement. Speculation but perhaps the broken frame later repaired but not of course, for retail. Is it another reason for the fork variance? The question leads to the 1978 TX900 listed on eBay as posted above and its story. Where and how did the authorized Trek dealer get it and as sold in 1981?

Another TREK 720?
My dilemma is 1) I already have a 1984 TREK 720 in my size, fully upgraded/restored 2) 25" is too big for me and 3) I'm not in the mood for another project. So, do I restore and flip, do I flip as-is or do I find a larger rider here on BFs with a comparable 54-56cm touring/sport touring bike that's interested in trading. Honestly, I'd prefer the latter.
Anybody interested in trading for a 25" TREK 720, almost all original but in need of some TLC?

Seller texted me this morning saying that bike had been sold however, he had another one exactly like it only larger and he'd give me a good deal on it. So now, I have a 25" 1983 TREK 720 in rough condition sitting in the back of my car. , since, given this is the C&V section, at the time any bike that's relevant to this section was built, zip-ties were THE way to set up a computer. Granted, I would've done it a little tidier, bottom of the tube, not over the shifter, not covering the branding, etc.
