Forum people have been very kind to me lately, giving me things that I really need for my Rabeneick. Today, this set of Universal levers, well one really, and would not even accept payment for the cost to ship. I owe him and a couple of others for their kindness. Anyway, these levers showed up and I only need one, which is good because one of the levers is badly damaged...

I got tired of using thin headset wrenches or heavy crescents that seem to slip so I ordered this...less than the cost of a Park tool and much less than a Campy.
It is long enough to loosen the tightest nut and I can also put it into service on my car.

I didn't get this in the mail but more of a purchase in Japan last month. I picked up a NOS Nitto NJ Slider Stem at a small bike shop I came across.

These are historically a track stem, look up Major Taylor as he seemed to bring them to prominence although they were around before him I think.
They fetch hefty sums no matter what, my 58 Paramount came with a Schwinn version in great shape that is pretty cool.

There is no upside down, if you google it you see even Major Taylor with it both ways. I imagine it was usually used lower for track racing but it is very easy to switch back and forth for either. Richard Schwinn indicated they sold a lot of them on road bikes like this one as they were popular for a long time.

I noticed the stem was set almost fully extended from the steerer, so thought it was a neat way to get an extra two inches. However the topside location means more stress on the shaft. Not a prob on the track but is worth bearing in mind going over a pothole.

Yep, awesome chromed steel, made for decades the same way. In my admittedly limited experience that includes a ridiculous amount of internet tomfoolery, I have not seen or heard mention of any failures. I am sure it happens, but these are stout to say the least, can't imagine breaking one. Also I don't think they would command the prices they do if they were subject to failure, they go on ebay for around $500 sometimes.
