I have a 2008 7.7FX with just over 22k miles on it. However, except for the frame, it's hardly the same bike anymore. Over the years, I've replaced the wheels, cassette (several), chain (several), crankset, pedals, saddle, seatpost, handlebars, stem, brakes, brake levers, rear derailleur, shifters, tires (many!), and grips/bar ends. TBH, when I bought it, I thought the frame was rather ugly, but I've learned to appreciate it. It has room for 700x42 tires, is light, and very comfortable. It's my main commuter. Brand new, it weighed 22lbs. With all of my modifications, it now weighs 24lbs.

I recently saw a new 7.7FX locked to the bike rack at work and noticed the frame is now all carbon with much less tire clearance (I'm guessing up to 700x32). It looks nice, but it's not as practical for commuting, IMO.

Correct. The earlier 7.9 such as Fubar168's above was a carbon version of the "FX", e.g. your 7.7FX. The more recent 7.7s and 7.9s (last three years or so) are simply unaltered carbon Madone or (now) Domane frames with flat bars. Tire clearance is probably 28 at most.
Specialized did this for a while as well with the Sirrus: re-badging Roubaix frames and slapping flat bars on them.

I have a Trek 7.5 FX D 2011 done approx 24k. It has the stock Deore LX T661 9 spd Top Normal RD. Is it OK to change to Shimano Deore 9 speed M591 or is there any other long cage one I may consider ? Also, when should one consider changing the RD which has not been damaged ?

Question does the FX 7.4 17.5 inch frame have mounts for 2 water bottles? I'm seeing conflicting info?

No it does not, I have a 2014 17.5 inch. I purchased a rear bag with bottle holder to add a 2nd bottle.

I am thinking of getting the FX 7.2 as it comes with Acera rear derraileur and shimano brakes, while the competition at same price range as Altus. Can someone tell me if it can handle cobblestone? My rides unfortunatly have some of that.
Googling other similar bikes I read a lot how the Specialized Cyrus is fast. Is the 7.2 similar in speed? IS th Cyrus advantage the narrower tyres?

Did you look at these,

Bontrager Race Lite Ergo Bar Ends | Bike bar ends | Cycling components | Equipment

Has anyone tried them with the IsoZone handlebar?

With the Isozone bars you need a $20 Bontrager adapter on the end of the bars to make them round.

The 7.2 stock tires should handle cobblestone. The hardcase tires are tough! Specialized Sirrus you mean. The bike itself is not fast, it is really up to the rider. The Trek and Specialized are comparable (depending on model). The Specialized may give you more bang for the buck. Ride them both and see what hits you.

Yes I saw that but the website was lacking any detail on it.

What didn't you like about them? Was checking one out at a bike shop and the gel in the grip seemed nice. Thinking about getting a 7.4 and would use bar and grips for a while before considering changes. That's why would like to find bar ends that work with those grips.

Almost any bar end would work, with the adapter.
As far as the bars and grips, I love them but think they are ugly.

I did not like the proprietary nature of the bar and the bar seemed thinner. I swapped to the Bontrager Race Lite bar. It is lighter yet standard in every other way. I also prefer the Ergon grips and tried to mount them on the IsoZone. I nearly had them properly mounted but they would move while riding no matter what I did. Take a look at the Specialized P2:

The FX 7.2, Sirrus(base model) and Quick 5(Cannondale) shure seem similar.
Thanks for clearing that out Mr. Yashinon .
But... if you think the Specialized might be slightly better? From the bikes specs the 7.2 looks like as some better parts, like the derraileurs.

Not so sure about the Specialized being slightly better. They all change things at different point in the lines. They place I'm looking is about where they switch from triples and mountain bike gears to road bike gears and compact doubles. So your talking Sirrus Sport Quick 4, and FX 7.4. I feel the FX 7.4 with the Acera/Deore drivetrain is a step above the others. At that point Cannondale and Trek are giving you a CF fork Specialized is not. After the Sport Specialized next step is to disc brakes. The Elite has a Compact double that I don't like but the comp at $1200 is a sub compact (48/32) with a 10 speed Tiagra in the back, I could deal with that it also they're step up frame from their A1 to E5 frames. And I think the Specialized look the best but was less then impressed with how much the comp disc at $1200 weighted.

I have to replace my Quick 4 do to an accident and right now I'm leaning to the Trek 7.4 it was the lightest of the 3 and I feel had the best components.

I am not expert but the Sirrus base seems on par with the 7.2...give or take. Anyway what matters is what fits you best.

From what i can tell, they both have Tourney cranks, and Altus shifters.
The Trek has slightly better derailleurs, with Acera rear, and Altus front.
Sirrus has Altus rear, and non-specified front (possibly Tourney?).
All of those components are not very expensive tho..
The Trek tires, being 3mm wider could be slightly better on your cobblestone

I ride a 7.4 and was wondering what the widest tire people have tried with the stock rims. When I purchased the bike we rode all paved roads or trails. Since then we have moved and now all the trails around us are unpaved gravel. I would like some tires that are a little less squirly on the hard pack surface we ride on.
