I wear some nice clear safety glasses I got at a motorcycle shop for about $12. These are great for early morning and late evening rides. They also have UV protection so they are fine on cloudy or foggy days too. When it's bright and sunny I get out the Bolle polarized dark glasses with a beefy plastic frame.

I wear the same glasses day or night. They start out almost clear and darken with light.
I'm not too light sensitive so I don't need anything too dark for the daylight. I wouldn't ride without something, especially in the cold.

I always have glasses on - it's become a habit almost - kinda feel nekkid if I take off without them - and I have alllll sorts of colors, clear, yellow, amber, gray, etc for night/rain, etc riding. But more importantly, I had stuff fly into my face that wasn't bugs - like roadspray from other vehicles (I ride a lot of busy city).
