Wow! Here I am in the middle of changing the gearing on my rig, and I check the posts to see this. Looks darn familiar ... and nice. I just removed all of the Shimano 600, Super Maxy crank, and butter-smooth 6-speed. don't worry, it's all being saved for a future project. This bike was donated to me after a recent theft of another bike. Changed everything to "touring" gearing, 48/36, nashbar moustaches, bar-end shift, 700c's, etc. The bike rides like a Cadillac, and makes my commute more fun each day. Now I have to get off the net and get this thing done; ride planned for the morning.

I finally have my new Marin Muirwoods 29er fully ready for commuting, so I'm celebrating by posting pictures (taken at dusk for authenticity).





Changes to the stock Muirwoods 29er setup:

• Cut the handlebars down from the absurd 27 inches out of the box to about 23 inches wide
• Replaced the WTB Speed Sport SE saddle with a WTB Rocket V Comp
• Replaced the 300mm seatpost with a 400 mm Nashbar seatpost
• Added SKS P50 fenders (with custom front mount)
• Added Delta Universal Rack
• Added Mountain Mirrycle mirror
• Added black Original Incredibell
• Added Trek Incite 11i computer
• Added Cateye EL530 headlight
• Added Nite Rider 5.0 Taillight
• Added Novara Commuter rack trunk with Planet Bike Superflash Taillight
• Added generic black water bottle cage
• Added Propel Mandarin Orange flavored water

At first I was a little worried about getting fenders on this thing. First, there's a ridiculous amount of space between the fork and the front tire. Second, the stays on Planet Bike Hybrid Cascadia fenders are too short for these wheels with these tires (and the width is nearly too narrow), while the Planet Bike 29er fenders are way too wide for these tires. The SKS P50's turned out to be the perfect size, and I hit the jackpot at the hardware store with the perfect piece to mount the front fender. It's a 3x3 zinc tee plate, wrapped in black duct tape and held in place by a pair of old reflector brackets. No cutting, no drilling.

I've got a pair of Crank Brothers Egg Beaters that will go on this bike next winter, but during the summer I'll be using it mostly for recreational family rides and quick trips to the market, so the stock platforms will do for now.

I have used the Trek Deluxe Back Trunk for a few years now. It really can hold alot of stuff. Two generous side pockets and the the top can expand vertically. I can fold dress pants, a shirt & more into the main compartment. Its been through a couple of crashes and lots of rain & still holds its own.

I don't recall the make of the rack. It attaches to the seat post. You can remove it easily. If I had to do it again, I would go for the permanently installed rack because I rarely have removed it.

The computer is a cheap Sigma.

....Seriously, what's up with that?

Actually, it's JFSEcho with the Pedro's Extra Dry Lube. Wicksey just quoted the picture. But I agree, what's up with that? And isn't there room in that massive rack trunk for the lube, degreaser, a complete tool set, kitchen sink, etc.?

Quick access lube to keep yer chain purrrring? I can think of many times when mine got clacky as the load increased on a hill, and I was wishing I could give it a shot of lube on the fly.

here's my commuter that I put together with an old Schwinn World Sport frameset, crazy stem, mismatched 700c wheels, internal-gear (nexus 8) and random parts like upside-down handlebars from an old schwinn:

Actually, it is attached to the seatbag. It has never fallen off. I used to keep it in the big bag, but it tends to leak - bad for the work attire.

If I ride on the weekend at my camp, I don't bring the big bag.

Also, having it handy all the time reminds me to lube the chain (I'm not good at remembering that stuff).

Is it a redband? How do you like it? My lust for a nexus 8 redband hub is tempered by my experience as a Nuvinci early adopter. Not that I think the Nuvinci sucks, but it is a niche product. Nexus 8 hub has a broader application potential.

It's not the redband. I like it a lot though. I don't even have a derailleur bike right now, just that one and a single-speed. The only drawback is the shifter, which is really only made to work on a straight bar, but there are other shifter options available. It shifts quickly and smoothly and has a good range. I feel like I need to change my front chain ring though,to a little bit larger size, because I find myself shifting back and forth between certain gears often.

pretty easy to set up though, and maintenance free. I never cared for derailleurs anyway. friction makes me anxious.
