Better to plan out what to eat about 24 hours prior & quickly after the ride. Protein, fiber, & water. How ever you can get those things with as little carbs/sugar possible is likely going to be most rewarding for your recovery.

I almost always ride fasting. I don’t like eating before an effort. I drink very little. It’s common for me to put in 40 miles without touching my water bottle and starting out fasting from the night before. Not recommending it, just saying it works for me.

An excellent point. I do hydrate adequately. I usually drink when it’s very hot and especially when the humidity is high. If I’m not sweating a lot then I’m not losing a lot of water. I weigh in after rides and seldom weigh within 0.2 lb of pre-ride weight on those days. I’m an anomaly. My kidney function assays are very good. (I work in a medical laboratory.)
