I've made some major progress on my Dawes Galaxy build. I thought I would include my pics here instead of in a separate thread.
The fixed cup was stuck. I tried to do the sheldon brown bolt and nut trick after normal techniques.

Didn't work. I bent the 1/2" bolt I was using. So I brought the Dawes to a local bike shop and paid to have it taken out. They tried to do it on the spot with several shop grade tools and failed. They were successful later and I picked it up a week later. No heat was used, no crimped or bent tubes. A tiny bit of chipped paint which is no problem. The Dawes already has tons of that.

I decided to change out several components.
The steel 27" rims were just too heavy for me. I liked the high flange milremo hubs, but it was more cost effective right now to buy an old tubular rear wheel and use a Dura Ace front I have as a spare than to build the milremo hubs with new rims. The rear wheel came with a Suntour perfect 14-23 and a Vitt Rally that holds air. My intent is so run wide cyclocross tires with all the clearance I have from the 27"-700c conversion for a plusher ride than my other road bikes. I'll leave that on for now until I get a cyclocross tubular on there.
Today my new rear wheel came, a tubular 126mm Campy record hub laced to700c Mavic 330gl.
I had to buy a new stem to replace the broken one that came with the bike and I really had my heart set on one of those GB hiduminium stems. I found one on ebay.uk. A little shorter than my dream length, but pretty close. I also didn't love the weinmann brake levers so I replaced those with Suntour superbe drillium levers.

I was able to use a shimano cartridge bb 113mm. Perfect length, chainline is fine. I had an old pair of superbe pedals with toeclips I slapped on.
The TDC headset was cleaned and repacked with new ball bearings and grease.
The bike came with Suntour barcons which I plan to install this weekend and wrap the bars with some brown cloth tape I have.
The derailleurs are Suntour: compe V and VTLux
The saddle is the last hurdle. I want to but a Brooks on, but I might have to suffer with something else for a few weeks.
I can't wait to finish the build this weekend!

Cool, thanks for posting! A sharp looking Dawes! Frame is almost actually the same. The font on downtube is the same, but the headbadge on your old bike has a red flame and the fork is all chromed instead of just the lower half of blades. I bet the simplex shifters are original and all the rest of the drivetrain were upgrades.
Maybe the fork was stripped to chrome underneath? The fork lugs look the same.

This is a 1962 I think, originally a 5 speed. I repainted it but followed the original layout, the green is a bit lighter than the original. The decals from H Lloyd are exactly the same as original with the exception of the crest on the seat tube; the original isn't available. The drivetrain is a Crane GS long cage with a Shimano 6 speed uniglide freehub, the two work really well together. It's one of my favourite bikes.

I finished the build this weekend and taped the bars yesterday after work. The Dawes came out pretty nice I think.
I'm going to finish the bars with hemp twine and shellac the bars this week. I left the engraved part of the bars bare. I really like those superbe levers. I wish they had barrel adjusters. Ultimately I would like to get a Brown Brooks swift saddle and a 6 speed freewheel. The rear spacing was 122 so I was able to put a 126mm campy record hub without cold setting. I've got the room so I want to add the extra gear.
That stem could use a polishing.
I used the metal housing that came with the barcons. A little floppy but retro.
I went for a 45 mile ride today and was very happy with the Dawes. I have a feeling this may be my go-to bike!

Thanks JJScaliger, the fenders look cool but they're pretty useless as fenders go. If you're looking for protection then a set of full sized polished aluminum ones would be best.

I installed a set of CHallenge almanzo tires on the Dawes this morning. I bought a 126mm Campy record clincher wheel to give this set up a try. I only had time to ride it around the block before work, but it looks and feels pretty good. It's going to snow tonight and tomorrow, so I wouldn't be able to get out for a while. Hopefully Friday I'll hit some dirt roads and see how these tires hook up.
The side knobs are a lot smaller than what I'm used to with Ritchey speedmax. Lots of clearance on the Dawes.

Will have to start on the slow winter project Dawes I just got. A late 60's, early 70's yellow Galaxy. This came to me as frame plus bar/stem so I will be building it up with a Suntour/weinmann/TA direction. First will have to be rust treatment and cleaning then parts on !
No pics yet but soon when I get home and pull it out of the shipping box. Super excited as I look at the other great looking examples on the thread pages. It will be my second Dawes to own.

I've posted this Dawes in the past but will show it here for the collected posterity.
Have ridden it for about 10 minutes, just waiting for Spring to adjust it and do a longer ride.

Q? Does your downtube shifters have a nub there to stop them from sliding down the tube ? My frame does not and I can tell where it has scraped paint when previous owners tried.

Hey all,
While throwing various parts into the Galaxy build box, I came to a part that I need some help with. I tried several seatposts and came closest to 26.4 or 26.6 being the correct size .4 seems to slide right in but .6 looks like it wants to go in.
Anybody with their bikes handy want to measure their post for me ? My frame is the yellow Galaxy posted a few days ago here and is probably a late 60's early 70s example. Frame is straight 531 Reynolds.
