My mtb came in last week, but I have no way to get it home because my roof rack can't handle boosted TA, and the thing is big enough that I can't just take the wheels off and stuff it in the backseat, so its just been hanging out at the shop. Also don't have any pedals for it, so that's another problem. 2.8 tires are ****ing massive.

was walking on some train tracks today and fell through a spot between 2 railroad ties. ****ed my shin up real good. luckily I was pushing my bike or else I would have fallen forward and probably snapped my shin bone.

A while back some of us were "discussing" how best to cut a seatpost. 
Not the same issue but today I got this picture from a guy to whom I sold a seatpost. The post was 27.2 and his vintage bike was something like 26.8. He was like, "Yeah, no problem. I have a lathe."
His wife had a stroke and rides a trike. He was building a "slower" vintage bike so he could ride with her. I thought that was cool and thought @SquidPuppet and some others might find it semi-interesting. Chucked the old Trek seatpost in a lathe and turned it down a few mils.

My father worked for decades in railroad yards. He was a train inspector for the Dept of Transportation. He often said it's very dangerous to walk on or near train tracks, for many reasons, including the tripping hazard that you fell victim to.

I actually gave him the post, two in fact. The one pictured was an older post he was going to test out in his lathe before he committed to turning down the nice post.

Might be iffy? That is the definition of iffy. They make 26.8 seat posts, they are not super hard to get. You can find vintage versions, modern Thomson versions, Nitto makes a nice one that has a classic vibe or you can go cheap and go with Sunlite, Dimension, Kalloy or one of the other many low cost seatpost options.
There might be other options as well that I don't remember because I bought a Nitto 26.8 and don't need another.
I laugh when people spend so much time and effort to do something that already exists in a better safer option. Though I guess if you have a lathe you might as well have fun with it.

I don't know that the guy spent "so much time and effort."
I hand delivered two free seatposts to his doorstep. He is/was a machinist and he probably turned it down between breakfast and his morning shower.
Taking 4 mils off a seatpost which is probably .125" walled isn't that much and he did it properly. Guy worked with metal for his whole life. I don't see much of an issue.

My concern wouldn't be the reduction of .4 mm. There's probably plenty of meat still there. My concern would be the potential for a stress riser where the cut stops/starts. With such a small amount of material being removed it seems like it would be difficult to make a good taper from one size to the next. I'm neither an engineer nor a machinist, but seat posts are one of the components that I'd avoid modifying.
