Well, I hate wearing and I never wore one for my everyday commute - my excuse was that there was just three road crossings I have to pass.
I recently changed the location where I live and bike (went from city bike to road) and a job as well.
Now it's a longer commute to work on a busy street. Definitely going to buy a helmet soon!

No one says that you have to wear it all of the time commuting, or if they do say it they can be ignored without consequence .

I am looking to get a new helmet for the season, and have narrowed it down to two; the Giro Chronicle and the Kali Maya. Does anyone have a recommendation or preference?

I've always worn once since riding on the pavement. Seems pretty obvious -- wear one, no big deal. Don't wear one, no big deal, until you get the hospital bill.

Any helmet is better than no helmet, when head hits the ground... Probably no helmet, is as good as most people think/hope it is... That is my takeaway from this thread...

This is true, but is it certain that when the head does not hit the ground, that there'd have been no additional risk had you worn a helmet? I don't think that's nailed down yet, although probably the cases where the helmet would help override the chances otherwise. This will depend a lot on individual factors.

I think it's two sides of the same coin when you're considering helmet use. We cannot rationally consider only one potential situation to the exclusion of other potential situations. You have to consider each scenario, the probable outcomes of each, and weigh the totality.

I just bought a helmet. On the MUT I ride it appears cyclists wear helmets and indigent people on bicycles do not. Not that I'm a snob or anything.

I bought a "Thousand" helmet (look it up, its nice) after commuting to school and work for 13 years. I always thought it looked ridiculous but I would feel so stupid if something happened that would have been prevented by a simple helmet.
I got this particular helmet because it looks stylish and it is actually quite useful in the rain.

I have to admit you expressed here one of the reasons I wear a helmet, when I do wear one. In those stupid news reports, for example a drunk driver crosses two lanes, plows into someone and drags him a block, and they always have to add "the cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet". Not wanting to be held to public ridicule, however ignorant it may be, is a pretty strong motivation.

Its a FACT that the efficacy of helmets has been grossly overblown.

I wear a helmet all the time and I insist that others who ride with me wear them, too. However, this article is worth a read...
