You want traction in the winter? Tune up your V-brakes and get a pair of studded tires!
(Somewhat ironically, the bike shown here has mounts for a caliper on its low-end Manitou fork. I've never been tempted to upgrade to disc in the 20 years I've owned the bike.)

V-brakes are just fine if your tires have traction.
