That could potentially be a really good approach. It's a small enough difference that re-dishing the wheel might not even be necessary for a basic degree of functionality, but then, doing so would probably make the wheel stronger.

Building my first tandem, but not much C&V interest, except for a Tigged steel frame and some Sugino tandem cranks.

It's happening, but the pics ain't yet. I need to read the latest on "posting pics."

Right now I'm having a problem with torque wrenches. They're Craftsman, but I think that company is disintegrating along with Sears.

USPS checked the boxes but didnt find anything, and the package was not insured (contrary to the seller's claim). It is frustrating but I am just letting it go and focusing on finishing the bike. Your bike looks cool BTW...there is something to be said for subtle, yet aesthetically pleasing color combinations.

Sears sold the Craftsman brand to Stanley Tools, and based on this story, Stanley looks like they want to expand Craftsman beyond just being a Sears brand. I would think they will continue to honor warranties, wherever Craftsman tools are sold.

Well, I see that Craftsman is sold and supported in quite a few local Ace Hardware stores, so that seems to be a part of what you're describing. The website seems to say that tools still have warrantees, and that the Ace outlets will support them. There could be some new limits, I suppose.

Closing in on completing my first C&V project! This week I learned that Suntour did not mince words when they gave their derailleur capacities. Trying to run a 50/34 crankset with a 13-28 FW pretty much choked the New Superbe, so in order to be able to actually ride the Centurion around here, I had to install a new Tiagra GS, which allowed me to go up to a 32 max sprocket. Today I got the drivetrain humming and the cable ends all tidied up. Now that it is a rider, I aired up the tires and rode up and down the street for five minutes. This quickly revealed that my new used FW makes some godawful noises at times; time to search the forum for guidance on that issue. Five minutes was also enough time for the headset-from-hell (AKA Aero Levin) to loosen up. Now I don't know if I want to go backwards and replace that POS or wait until next winter. Something to think about as I wait for bar tape to come in the mail.

I spent part of the day replacing the timing chain and timing gears on the tandem. 10,000 miles will do this to you. This pic doesn't do it justice.



As I was picking up my tools I noticed the rear tire on the Gran Sport was low. Hmm. I just rode it a week or so ago. It turns out the tube was leaking around base of the valve stem. Hmm. That tube already had four patches. Maybe it's time for some new tubes. A 32 mile round trip every day to work can plum wear out a brace of tires.

Many things. I finished installing Velo Orange Zeppelin 650b fenders on my 1995 Trek 820 which has 26" wheels. Most of the components on this bike are from the mid-'80's to early 1990's.

My hands aren't strong enough to bend the fender outward in order to decrease the radius, per VO, so used a tennis ball. By the time the rear fender was on....I just wanted it to be over. Fender line isn't great but at this point I'm done messing with it.

I'm pretty sure that is the classiest MTB I've ever seen. Bravo! Looks comfy as well.

I know what you mean about those fenders, I've got them on my French bike shown a few posts back. They are high quality, but difficult to mount. Your installation is very clean - I see you've cut the stays to exactly the right length, and you bent the rear bracket perfectly. Nice work!

If you get over your frustration and decide to tweak the rear fender a bit, you might start with some Dremel work on the front edge of the fender where it contacts the frame. That will allow you to slide the whole fender forward in that bracket and snug it down more against the tire. I did that on one of my installs and that solved it.

I can relate. but wutz nice is, you can adjust them later on. if the art of writing is re-writing, then maybe the same applies to fendering?

@DQRider - good idea about the dremmelimg of the forward slot on the rear fender. I'll have to look at that. I swear I bent and un-bent the arms of that seat stay bracket about 5 times. Let's just say that the fender no longer looks new.

Extending the slot is a good idea, but I also carved the sides of the fender to fit between the rails. Otherwise the bent-in ends come dangerously close to the tire. Kind of like this:



(Slightly exaggerated for clarity.) Leave a generous radius and you shouldn't have any trouble with cracking.

The pleasure of stripping 30 years of gunk off of a quality alloy Japanese derailleur from the late 80s.

This is getting a full re-build to be a fun neighborhood rider (and occasional gravel bike). Plenty yet to do. Needs a couple chainrings and a chain, cables and tires. Everything else is for fit: wide riser bars and a taller stem.

Fitting fenders can be a real pain! I challenged myself with fenders that are rated for a tire smaller than what I was using! Not only that but the brackets didn't reach and the rear seat stay did not have a hole for a brake!

What I last worked on was gluing some new tubulars on a set of rims with very old tubulars on there. One had the casing rip open!

The other wrenching thing was replacing the brake pads on the above bike after 5100+ miles. They were the original Die Compe pads from 1997. They still worked great! The new Kool Stops will be as good once they break in!

Came up with a way to un-stick my '89 Cannondale SR2000's fused drive side Dura Ace BB cup as previous attempts with the all enclosed ~36mm Park Tool wrench had failed, including using a hammer to jar it loose. The problem was that the wrench would very easily slide off the preposterously small 3mm/1/8" flats and would not only not bring about any success, but would also munge the wrench. So I had a thought:

Still use the Park Tool wrench by placing it in the ready-to-use position; but employ some large diameter, thick washers (from my home made headset press "tool") to slide on over the BB spindle/axle and up against the tool. I would then mount a non-drive side crank arm to the BB spindle/axle, using the crank bolt and tightening it ever so slightly--just enough to hold the washers and thus the tool onto the BB cup and not allow anything to slide off. Think metal sandwich.

Several wacks with the dead blow hammer later and we had movement! Two more blows and it was game over for the resistance. Success!

All of this means that I have an old Cannondale frame--my rare and very nice 66cm SR, able to accept all the BSA BBs and assorted cranksets (and thus full bike groupsets, the true key) rather than simply JIS square taper units, as great as those are. I had the frame for sale for weeks and no bites, but I have removed the ad now. In the words of Arnold, "I'M BACK!" Stay tuned to the STI/Ergo thread, another entry is coming!!

I guess this manufacturer wasn't thinking about fenders. ton of room under that front fork crown but the brake lines up right where the fender goes. then in the back it's just obnoxious. good for you for getting it done tho. wutz that holding the rear in place?
