Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As of today I am at 5694 miles. All on road between 5 bikes. My home field is covered in snow at the moment but tomorrow I'll be riding my 29er for a quick year ending 5 mile jaunt through the neighborhood.

3664 miles and 180,844' which is almost the same distance as (but 100k feet more than) 2014, another year when I was out of commission for 8 weeks in the middle of the riding/racing season. Won't be riding tomorrow, but do plan to get the new year off with a bang with an extra-long group ride on Sunday.

Don't know what my total mileage is, but it included at least 1150 loaded touring miles with tens of thousands of feet of climbing with a cima coppi of just under 8,000' above sea level. Considering those miles were ridden on a heavy ass, non-aero bike with four panniers, tent and full cooking and camping gear, I think they are worth about 7,000 unloaded road miles at least.

Have 2899 in road miles, down from previous years but I ran 1540 miles. Basically off the bike last 3 months to get my running legs back.

I always wonder if it is downhill in every direction that they ride.

I discovered the hard way that you can ride a 1,000 miles a month and gain weight while doing it. The workout is part of the solution, but eating enough junk can still counteract that if you don't watch it.

The "junk miles" idea assumes that you are using/wasting your miles to train for some other event (ie, racing of some sort). But, most of us aren't training for anything else- those umpty thousand miles ARE the event. They may be fast or slow, but not junk.

Or they are all Junk Miles.

Dont get me wrong.
I am not training either and so all of mine are junk (or not).
I ride for my own reasons but dont bother looking at what others do or feel a need to tell people how many km I did or did not do for the week/month/year.

3050 for 2016. That's up about 600 from last year. I hope to hit 3600 next year for an average of 300/ month.

None of my rides were commuting to work, nor going shopping, so I guess they were all junk rides.

Literally anyone who refers to any ride on a bike as "junk miles" takes themselves entirely too seriously, and should therefore be taken very lightly by the rest of us.

Though I am no strongly considering painting "junk miles" with a forward-pointing arrow on my NDS chainstay. My bike has FREDWAGEN in bold letters on the downtube, so I think it fits the theme.

...says the guy actively trolling up the pissing contest thread, with apparently zero intention of stating their annual mileage.

btw, people generally laugh at jokes when they're funny. You're just being a dick.

Just one Junk -Milers opinion.

When not otherwise occupied, I pass the time by recklessly engaging random trolls on Internet forums. So see, in this event, you actually have some value. You continue to have nothing pertinent to add to the thread, but this surprises no one.

OK ... now that the year is within an hour of ending, we can post some totals!

5760.76 km cycled outside in 2016

1133.02 km walked in 2016

211 km cycled indoors virtually, not really counted in the official total, but ...

Plus a bunch of other stuff like canoeing, rowing, weight lifting, and heaps and heaps of stairs climbed.
