I'm currently fitted with Vittoria Randonneur II, cheap and durable, but if they run in the vicinity of the normal Randonneurs, that's 32.4w rolling resistance per tire.

Compared with the GP4000s, which test at 12.2w per tire, that's 40w total right there.
Not sure if your current Vittorias are 32mm and the GPs will be 25mm, but thats the width which were measured to get the #s you mention. I would guess the Randonneur in 25mm would have less rolling resistance. Not GP4000 level, but still less than the 32s.

Do you realize that with two tires that are identical in everything but width, the wider tire has less rolling resistance?

On the same tire, wider should have less rolling resistance than narrower.

But it's all good. It'll be 28s v 28s for me, and I'll report back on back-to-back results when the tires come in.

Yes, the theory of wider tires being faster etc is well understood on my end.
But I am not going to pump a 25mm tire to the same pressure as a 32mm tire and the contact patch will therefore be different between the two sizes.

Plus- I dont put it past that tire(Randonneur) to somehow defy physics and manage to be slower in both smaller AND larger sizes. Thats just how wonky that tire is(i have a pair)

My other bike has Conti Ultra Sport II and Ultegra/Open pro wheels and the GP4000 blows them away. 28c is closer to 30, which barely fits my Ironman, but the ride is sublime

I replaced a set of 23 gatorskins with 25 Continental GP4000IIS's...much better ride, much smoother...everything about it was better.

Yes, I've read lots of horrible reviews of the Randonneur. On the other hand, I have the Vittoria Voyager Hyper. Man, that's a nice tire.

It may be me, but I swear my GP4000II's roll better as well or better than my Veloflex Masters. Dare I say I'm getting spoiled by the 25's? My touring bike has GP4000II 28's, but it's hard to compare with the bike being so different.

Updated my Merckx

Replaced the newer Ultegra crank with an older model, switched out the Shimano wheels for Mavics and found a saddle that matches the bar tape (though it's hard to tell from the pic). I think it looks better.

FWIW, 700x28 GP4000S II's are measuring a bit over 30mm wide on several wide rims I've used. They're an outstanding tire. I've got various sizes of GP4000S IIs on six different bikes right now and another two sets on the shelf waiting for a need. I like 'em a lot.

Not really. ..if it can take the beating from my roomate mountain biking it should be fine. It did well today staying on and it looked secure during my ride.

Added some Microshift 7sp shifters to my '87 Schwinn Prelude.
Love the cockpit now with the Nitto 0degree stem, Soma Hwy1 bars, and 7sp shifters.

That's actually nice to hear. I've been looking to fit the widest that my frame will accept. And 30mm is probably the max (that still leaves a couple mms).

I was originally thinking Challenge Strada Biancas because they actually come in 700x30, but they seem to get mixed reviews (fantastic... but the durability for the cost isn't great).

I recall reading that some Challenge tires had a reputation for growing a few millimeters in size with use. Is that still true, and which model is/was it?

Panaracer 32mm GravelKings on 19mm Mavic Reflex rims (predecessor to Open Pro) measure 30mm actual width, and Compass 28mm Chinook Pass EL measure 29mm actual width on 23mm TB14 rims. The latter are very nice tires, the former are pretty good.

No idea. I opted for Conti GP4000siis instead, to save a couple bucks.

Fiannly upgraded my Ciocc to Brifters.

After months of deciding, should I convert my DT shifters to Brifters, pulled the trigger. I think that one classic bike with brifters, is great, but I'm not touching my Campy , Concorde, unless I can make 8 speed Ergo Shifters work properly . Thanks for looking . KB

Update: This Micro-shifters work as good as my Shimano Claris . A little different configuration. KB
