Some calipers have the reach range stamped on the backside. Perhaps your current ones do.

You should be good to go with any short reach dual-pivot caliper, which means you can get some great (used) stuff out there!

Brake reach as I understand it is measured at from the center of the mount point/hole to the (vertical) center of the rim's brake surface. According to Schwinn Catalog Scans, for an '87 Prelude, the spec'd calipers were Dia-Compe G 400N units, and from my understanding and experience, 400 = short reach (39-49mm reach) and 500 = standard reach (47-57mm reach). The Le Tour of the same year, a 'rung lower' (of sorts, even if purpose differed), run Dia-Compe QS 500N calipers, which makes sense (larger tires, less performance-oriented, etc).
You should be good to go with any short reach dual-pivot caliper, which means you can get some great (used) stuff out there!

I've finally hit the 10 post mark on BF, so I reckon I can finally share my bikes. I read the forums about everyday and love seeing all the beautiful bikes. Here's my 88' Prelude and my 86' or 88' Voyageur. I have been tearing down and creating new versions of the Prelude since I got it last spring. It's my favorite bike and I have ridden it everywhere, and ride it everyday to campus. The voyageur I just got last month- I've been wanting one since I first saw one here, and finally came across this one. Some days this bike just feels way too big, others it feels just right. My prelude is a 56cm and it fits like a glove. The voyageur has a 58cm tt and a 60cm st. I haven't made up my mind about it but i think i'd be much happier with a smaller voyageur. I just don't think i'll find one. In a perfect world, i could trade my voyageur for another smaller one. Anyways, here are my two bicycles. I'll have to take some better pictures of the voyageur as it's really a beautiful bike.

Rachel, your Prelude should use 39-49 brakes. Lots of great Tektro and Shimano (6402/1055/5500/6500/5600/5700/6600/6700) options out there, and most of them are reasonably inexpensive.

Great looking bikes and glad you really enjoy them! It's great to see yet another person from our generation ( @tricky , and @Hardrock23 among others that I currently don't know/forget!) pick up the C&V torch to carry with us to the time when we as humans are C&V.
Just to add to the list - AustinFitz & Kilroy1988 & mstateglfr...I can't remember any others.

The new paint definitely has a placebo effect on me. I'm no where nearly as fast as Aru, but I sure feel like I am...
