Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UPDATE:

Per WhyFi 's prodding I watched the video and real quick knew what was wrong. I've been lazy and measuring by tablespoon "scoops" and have been a little short and it makes a big difference. Thanks WhyFi .
I made it in the automatic drip maker today. i usually do unless i feel like doing the French Press but it is still smooth and the boldness jumps out.
I'd estimate i was 10-15% short on coffee.

Here's a good lesson that can be applied to cycling. Don't take shortcuts and skip something that doesn't seem important. It's all important. If your aren't getting the same results make sure you are putting the same in.

You are turning into a serious cyclist. Kudos? Will you back to Tri's when it is safe? Will all this cycling help, or were you already strong in this discipline vs the other two? What's your weakness - swimming?

its kind of ironic that I would make that mistake. Early on in my career my boss impressed upon me the concept that little things add up to make a big difference.

He would always ask this question to make a point. Have you ever been bitten by a elephant? Of course the answer is almost always no. The he'd ask; have you ever been bitten by a mosquito? Of course, the answer was always yes. Then he'd say - it's the little things that'll get you.

For a serious cyclists (), that's prolly about 17 or 18 hours. There's more than one way to skin that cat, but it's hard to do without riding each day. Humbug tends to have fairly regular daily output, whereas I'll have 4 or 5 days of ~20 miles and usually 2 or 3 bigger days, with 60-80 being pretty common.

Agree it takes a big time commitment. I am a not-so-serious cyclist and typically ride 3 days/week: Weds (50-70), Saturday (70-100), and Sunday (30-50) so a big week for me is 200. I don’t know if I ever had a 300 mile week.

My most efficient weeks have been barely on the cusp of 200/week*, so I don’t think I’ll ever be nearing anything past 250 per week anytime soon, if ever.

Now that morning commute is starting to get logistically more complex, I doubt I will be able to commute to work any longer. I’m afraid it’s back to “I must have made a mistake the last count, let me recount how many CMU blocks I have in the garage walls” for me during the week.

* 4 days of commuting (~26 miles round trip), with one long-ish, one short ride on the weekends.

Thanks, maybe, and cycling was the weak spot (now it's swimming and running, but I can fix those I think if it comes to that).

In my heyday, I was riding to work 5 days a week, and doing at least a 200k and a 80-100 mile recovery ride over the weekend. These were summertime schedules, and Mrs. LAJ didn't need me around to garden. 400k's start at 4 am, so I was home by dinner time, and a 600k meant I was home for breakfast. With the longer days, I had time to take care of house stuff after work or after rides. Structured training put the kabosh on that tomfoolery.

Well, have a spouse on board and no kids, so no family obligations. Have a telecommuting job. Get up and knock out a couple hours Monday-Friday, then on the weekends do something between 45 and 65 miles while she's doing her workouts, going to the farmers' market, or just enjoying my being out of her hair.

I did 300 miles/week twice. Once in 6 days and the other was 7. Back in the early mid 90's. I'm pretty sure both were vacation weeks. I was young and unfettered. Back then I did 6 days/week and 150-200 miles.

I used to really love vintage planes, and I still have a half-dozen or more nice Millers Falls, but good, new planes are so much easier to deal with out of the box. Yeah, you can fettle those ol' planes so that they'll perform splendidly, but it takes a lot of time to find a good candidate (at a reasonable price) and a lot of elbow grease and sandpaper. At this point, I'd rather save some pennies and buy a Veritas or Lie-Nielsen. Same with chisels.
