Well, a customer dropped it off a long time ago, and then never came back. It sat around long enough that my boss gave it away to someone.
A month or two ago, before I started working there, the original owner came back looking for it. So, he got it back from the person it was given to, and there it sits. The original owner has not been back to get it, or get it fixed. It's really in decent shape, but for how long, sitting out back in the weather. It's a big mess, but if it comes around to me having a chance at it, it's mine for good.,,,,BD

That's a Stumpjumper Sport, they had the lugged unicrown fork instead of the crowned fork during the mid '80s. Mine's an '86 and is identical to yours except it has a canti brake on the seatstays instead. Check the serial number under the bottom bracket -- somewhere in there you'll see an "86" or some similar number and that'll be the year.

Here's my newest project bike, an older Specialized Rock Hopper.

The finish is finished so it will have to be repainted.
I'm tossed as to weather to keep this set up as a Mt. bike or build it up as a commuter.
She needs cables, paint, and a frt. rim but other than that and a paint job everything looks pretty good.
Got it dis assembled today, start sanding it down tomorrow.

Not bad for 10 bucks.

The paint is a lot worse than it looks in the pics.
I really hate to sand a bike down and lose all the stickers but in this case I think it's the way to go.
Tires and pads are original and hardly used but there are lots of scratches and paint chips. My guess is that it spent a lot of time on a trunk carrier or strapped to the back of a motor home. Also the front rim has a small ding you can see in the pic at the 6:00 position. I haven't laced up a wheel in quite a few years but I may use this as an opportunity to revive that old skill.
I'm not to up to date on the values of these things. Is this bike worth putting a lot into?

It's not worth a mint, not even if it was in perfect condition. Clean it up as well as possible, and enjoy it. Unless you're doing it for personal enjoyment, anyways. I wouldn't sink a lot of money into it, unless it was one of the first year model Stumpjumpers with the double crown forks.,,,,BD

All Stumpjumpers switched to the unicrown fork at the same time.

Sports were not equipped with XC. It's probably not a Sport.

^That Rockhopper is a nice bike, it's more or less the same as the old Stumpjumpers. I would not repaint it - it's one of the earliest Rockhoppers. Also, the decals would be hard to find. It's worth putting a few bucks into ($100 or less).

I'll probably keep the $$$ minimal but it does need a new frt. rim, cables. Also, the paint really is trashed with surface rust just getting started. With the climate around here that is not good.
If I can scrounge up the right components for it this would make a dandy little commuter.
Time to start digging around for parts.

i picked this up at the bike show in dudley ma on sunday. unfortunately i left my camera at home so i had to take this from my picture phone. that's too bad 'coz the doors made for a cool backdrop.



i've been looking for a vintage lugged mtb w/horizontal dropouts for an IGH build. i bought this for that reason but the more i think about it the more i am inclined to keep it as is. it's got it's fair share of rust but i should be able to take care of it. i know it's 'just a ross' but it's super comfy and has all the suntour stuff and i've had good experience with the ukai rims. i'm a big guy so i dont care that it weighs like a tank.

of course if i keep it as is, that means i have to continue the search for the right frame for my IGH wheelset. not sure the wife will be pleased about that and i dont know how much longer i can sleep on the couch!

1982 Ross Mt Hood. You should keep it as is, because from what I can see of it, it is 100% original, down to the grips, saddle, and pedals. Give it a good cleaning, rebuild the bearings, and ride the hell out of it. Nice find!! I had one identical to it for a while, equally as original. Ishiwata 024, lugs, and gold anodized rims. You can't ask for a whole lot more in an early model MTB.,,,,BD

The model name should be on the right chainstay, if it's not faded or peeled. The Hi-Tech top tube decal, and Mt Hood decal faded a LOT faster than the rest...

I have a solid chrome Mt Hood from 1984. I will trade you even, if you just want something to customize? I miss the old black beauty

That bike looks like it has almost exactly the same components as the Rock Hopper I just picked up.
Maybe Giant as offering brand distributors a very similar "package."

Just picked this up.
It's a Scott, Windriver. DB Cro Mo frame in very nice shape. Kind of a girly paint job but it is for my wife and it matches her helmet.
Plan is to move all the goodies off of the Rock Hopper and onto this. Looks like almost everything will swap right over.
Any pointers would be most welcome.
