Cheapo lightweight-long sleeve synthetic base layer off Amazon....I can get two for the cost of one set of sunsleeves from PI or Bontrager or elsewhere. Does the same exact things just as well (keeping UVA off) or better (staying put and not rolling down), for less. Also, I've found as UV has gone up over the years--2 years ago I started tanning through my cycling jerseys, creating bib-strap tan on my back....which is no bueno. Started always wearing them when riding in summer sun to stop that crap.
Legs are Voler knee warmers. Was a bit chilly that morning....also have a cheap pair of leg coolers for summer use (not pictured). It is so disgustingly hot and humid here come high summer that sweat doesn't evaporate anyway, and sunscreen just sweats off in no time nevermind becoming human fly/gnat-paper...so the extra lightweight layer doesn't make me any more uncomfortable than I am anyway.

Saturday I did a local gravel race, the Gravel Ride for Maisie's Pride
103 miles through the Flint Hills of Kansas. Great race, and for a good cause. The funds help keep the local swimming pool maintained and open and free for the children of Eskridge, Kansas.
As confirmed pack fill, my own race was unremarkable - 8th out of 24 in my age group (Men's 39 and under); 24th out of 105 finishers. Finished in 6 hours 47 minutes, and that included about 20 minutes of stopped time because one of my friends was plagued with 3 flat tires throughout the day, so I'm happy with it.
However, my friend Hannah, who I rode with all day, ended up being the overall women's winner. To be perfectly clear, she didn't need my help, but because I was riding with someone who had a chance to podium, it provided motivation for me in the last few miles to keep pushing instead of sitting up and soft-pedaling. The last 15 miles or so were uphill and directly into a ~15 mph headwind, and 85 degree temperatures feel a lot hotter when there's no shade and you've already been riding for 6 hours.
Fun day. I grabbed most of these pictures from various people on facebook.

There was only about a mile of this, the rest of the course was smooth and fast. This section would have been rideable, with moderate skill, but it caused a bottleneck and I was forced to dismount because people in front had stopped.

Monsoon season hit....In the last week 6+ inches of rain, have turned creek trickles into 20ft deep fast moving water.
Needless to say all the levee trails and rails-trails and bike path underpasses are now submerged in muck....these photos would normally barely show any water at all...last week we had 90F, now it is 40-50F with strong surface winds. Brrr.

I rode NF-26 (Suiattle River Road) today.
It starts out paved.
Pavement ends about ten miles in. At that same point, there's a bridge leading to forest road NF-25 on the south side of the river. There's something I need to visit across that bridge, relating to my tires, but today isn't the right day. Maybe after the sun gets more time to work its magic...
Much of NF-26 is surrounded by trees, but you can often see the foothills through them, and in places it opens up.
At the end of NF-26 is Sulphur Creek Campground. But I only got within four miles of that. Instead, I took a left turn, up Green Mountain Road. It's a 2200-foot climb with an average gradient of around 8% and a pretty gnarly surface for something calling itself a "road"... but the view at the top is nice. You can see the Suiattle River valley below.
From here, I retraced my steps and rode back. The most daunting thing about the ascent was knowing that I'd have to come back down.
And finally, just another photo of the river from the gravel section of NF-26:

One of a very small number of pics I have from the 2017 Almanzo 100; 40F, steady rain, and 15-20 mph sustained winds kept my phone in my pocket and fingers in my gloves. Here's some of my riding buddies at the Forestville oasis (mile 66). The hardest part of the ride was leaving that fireplace:

Almanzo can be amazing and rewarding, when the sun is out on a May day in Southern Minnesota; and it's can be viscous and cruel on a cold and rainy day. I made a long race report on an Almanzo thread.
