A box of bike stuff I ordered showed up today - In addition to what I ordered - gloves and a rain jacket - this was in the box.

Has Schick decided to go after the cycling market?

Best reasons to shave:
1. Road rash clean up and healing -- been there
2. Massage -- I have a massage about every 3 weeks
3. Sunscreen and leg hair don't mix
4. Leg hair prevents leg grippers from keeping shorts in place
5. Show off the muscles you've worked so hard for -- vanity??

When I was riding 6+ hours a day messing, I shaved.
I shaved for the simple reason that the hairs collected road filth, exaust, and general polutants.
As I was spending so much time in the saddle (especially considering HOW I was riding) it was mathmatically reasonable to assume I would be collecting road rash along the way. Lack of hair meant I wasn't grinding filth into the wound when i crashed, wipe clean, bandage and ride. This made the healing sooo much faster. Now I commute and shaving isn't even in my mind. Now if I wanna race some next year.....

I went down hard on some rocky single track last week and have been wishing I'd shaved ever since. Between washing the clotted blood out of my leg hair and changing the dressings daily I've been wishing that I wasn't quite as hairy a guy as I am. Ouch!

I (will) shave because:

Hairy legs + spendex...yuck
When riding/racing with 1s, 2s, 3s, life is a lot easier with shaved legs. I could get away with it when I was a 4.
A condition of team sponsorship (it was directed at me)...and I can't pass up those deals.

When I get roadrash, I just shave over it.

I first shaved when getting a tattoo on my calf. It was so much easier to apply sunblock that that alone was reason enough for me. My girlfriend likes it, and I like that, so that's another good reason. I get ingrown hairs wherever I shave above my knee, so I only shave to where my shorts come down. I've not yet tested the road rash hypothesis and I'm in no hurry to do so.

I used to shave my legs, but my school mates (who didn't also cycle) didn't understand. I grew hair to be accepted.

no razor shall touch the legs.

grew up playing football, baseball, softball, & have had my share of gravel/rock/dirt rash & my legs healed up just fine. i've been down a couple times on my bike, had the hair stripped away, and the healing process wasn't affected by my hairy legs.

i've also have my share of massages over the years & it feels great even with the hair.

i once mentioned to my wife i was thinking of shaving and she wasn't to keen on the idea. she likes her men to be men. no fancy lads allowed.

i did shave my upper thighs once & it was the worst experience. the prickling drove me crazy & my wife wouldn't sleep close to me until it grew back because of the same reason.

shaving is purely for vanity but all the other excuses make it sound like a necessity.

Hey, they look just like my legs....

Funny isn't it, how when I raced I shaved to look the part, especially when riding through town so people would see me as a "BIKE RIDER", but now I don't race I don't shave and I can still beat most of the guys I used to race against. My mates occassionly tell me to shave, but to be honest I couldn't care less what anyone says or thinks, just because I don't shave doesn't mean I can't ride a bike.
Anyway, my wife always hated me having better looking legs than her, in fact, the first time I shaved she was so angry with me....she slept on the sofa

The reason male cyclists shave legs is to cut down on drag. If you're in Tour de France, it probably makes a difference. Otherwise probably not.

Wrong. It's to make it easier to deal with road rash. Also makes massages easier.

I let my leg hair grow out for a few weeks and now I realize I'd rather stay smooth. Even if I stopped cycling, I'd probably still shave my arms and legs.
I'm used to it now. My wife likes it. I don't care why I'm "supposed" to do it, but I will keep doing it.
That is all. Carry on.

I think most folks will admit that roadrash has little to do with it. The only really good reasons I've heard, or at least reasons that are valid for me, are the massage thing and the sunblock thing. A bottle of sunblock lasts me much longer with shavd legs, and it takes a small fraction of the time to apply the stuff compared to when I'm hairy. But I have very pale skin and I tend to put a lot of sunblock on, so saving myself 5 minutes per application is likely saving myself at least 15 minutes every day during the summer.

In my case, my girlfriend likes it and so do I. For both of us, the skin on skin without hair thing definitely heightens the pleasure. If I show up in bed stubbly, however, I won't be getting any closer than the other side of the sheet.

^^ah but have you experienced healing up with both hairless and hairy?^^
Roadrash IS the reason for shaving. When you spend as much time in the saddle as a pro, crashing and it's subsequent healing time are a real issue. Minimizing contamination of the wound, cleaning et al can really make huge difference, sometimes upto weeks. Drag and massage are bonuses but i've never had to apply sunblock to my legs because they see so much sun over the years I have a perma-tone etched into my derma.

hahahaha. I love how all the women here who think that it's sexist to assume that most women in our society shave use themselves as an example, yet they only admit to not shaving during the "winter months" when they can wear pants. C'mon, don't be *******! Parade that fur around in your bathing suit during July to show us how wrong we all are.

Alot of chicks do dig the shaved legs... (but that's not why I do it).

#1. It's easier and less nasty to self massage and or have someone massage your legs
#2. It's much less dramatic cleaning up hairs out of road rash (been there, done that!)
#3. It's cleaner looking *ON* the bike (we really don't want to look like "hairy gorillas" while riding with other cyclists, now do we??!!!

My current girlfriend doesn't like it much (she says it's against nature). I think it's deeeeeaaaaad sexxxxay (said in best "Fat B@stard" impersonation)!!
