I got an email back from the person that interviewed me this morning basically asking when I could start. I was up front and honest with him and told him that there was another position I was applying for. Here's what I wrote:

One last thing I wanted to mention and to be up front with you about, because I can tell you're in a hurry to fill the position.

As I mentioned in the interview, the big thing I'm looking for are some new challenges, beyond beating my head against a budget brick wall, and I thought you should know that I also have my resume in for another position on campus. That position is a non-sysadmin role, but rather information security. Infosec has been a hobby of mine for many years (example, https://old.honeynet.org/scans/scan25/sol/ken/notes.html), and I had been asked to keep my eye out for that position back in November. Unfortunately, that position does not close until March 1st, so it's unlikely they will even call me back for an interview for several weeks. But, if they wanted to interview me, I would like to meet with them before I make any final decisions.

So I guess what I'm saying is, if you have a very strong second candidate please don't wait on me and hesitate to make them an offer, but if I'm it, could you please give me a few weeks to meet with the Infosec guys?

Thanks again for the interview today and have a great weekend!
So at least my conscious is clean no matter what happens.

I just started looking for jobs early this week and have had two interviews, and am getting flown out to another company next week for an interview. I'm guessing I'll have to be writing similar letters soon. Better to be in that position that begging for a job, though.

I'm sort of in a similar boat. Last fall, I applied to some PhD programs, but I kept applying for new jobs. Well, I got a new job, but few days before I was to start, I got notice that I was a finalist for one of the PhD programs.

I let my new employer know about the application and interview opportunity - they seem ok with it, but are not excited. So, I am going to go to the interview next week and we will see what comes of it.

Listed a queen mattress/box spring/frame on CL for free. Figured I'd get rid of it relatively quickly. The first e-mail came minutes after posting, and they'll pick it up at 6. Since then, I've gotten 12 e-mails in two hours. I had no idea there was such a need for free crap. One person even offered me $20.

I got $50 for an 8 year old mattress/bs/frm from my felonious brother-in-laws' employer when he was a bouncer at a strip club. I asked him, the owner of the club, if it was for the VIP lounge. He said it was for one of his "rental properties".
