Tom, I have a set of white SKS Longboard fenders (that have a few holes drilled in them for) that you can have for shipping. Those Blumels barely qualify as fenders anymore!

Another beautiful build! That kind of light is perfect pictures. Just enough light to bring out soft details with shine and depth, but not enough for dark shadows and blown highlights.

Are those Tektro R559 brakes? I have the shorter R539's on my Fuji, and they are a massive upgrade from the Dia-Compe sidepulls it came with. Effortless stopping power. The look really nice, too.

I've been off the bike for pretty much all of December and January, but today's weather was not to be missed. Quick 10 miler on the Sports along the Hudson River Greenway to the bridge and back. Good to be rolling!





I'll ride my International tomorrow to try out the Compass Bon Jon Pass tires that arrived today.

Good eye, scratchpaddy, in more ways than one. First, let me compliment you on your photos: Wow... were you using a tripod for these? Or some very nice equipment? If you tell me you caught these on a smartphone, I'm going to be very sad...

Also, you correctly spotted my R559s. I use them on all my 27 - 700c conversions. As you say, you can't beat them mechanically, and yeah, they are quite pretty as well.

It's fascinating to me that we have so many great photographs during the slow winter season. This has become my favorite thread... I've probably said that before. But it just keeps getting better!

That's a well-preserved Raleigh, sir! It would fit right in on the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour.

But that setback seatpost... was that a period accessory? It looks custom-made. Nice photos as well.

Yes, they are similar... they could very well be made with the same tooling, in the same factory for all we know. But if you look down near the bottom of the fenders here, you will see the V.O. logo. These are from Velo Orange.



Looking at the two websites, it would appear I paid an extra $2 for those logos...

Thanks, @DQRider. It gets a lot of use as my daily commuter here in NYC during the warm months, and it's my grocery and errands bike. As soon as I finish my coffee we'll roll over to the greenmarket. If I were closer I'd join the Lake Pepin ride for sure.

It was a bit of a barn find, pretty crusty with melted-on tires but it cleaned up nicely. It is pretty much original. I've put on cork grips, a new LED headlamp, the rack, replaced the rubber blocks on the original pedals and installed a larger cog. Consumables, of course. The seat post is a BMX item, called a lay back post. I'm 6' 3" and the fore-and-aft was a bit cramped, this helps a lot.

Thank you, DQ. Phone cameras are more than adequate for great pictures these days, but I wasn't using one. I have a Sony a7r, and I was using it with a Pentax 55mm lens from the 70's which hardly ever leaves my camera anymore. It renders beautifully, and it only cost $25. Instead of a tripod, I used fences and posts to stabilize the camera.

This is my favorite thread on the forum, too. So many great pictures and stories. I avoided signing up for BF for a long time, because I was afraid of getting obsessed with gear and specs and little expensive things that everyone needs to buy. I got caught up in the Cult of Gear big time on photography forums. It took years and lots of money before I finally understood that the person behind the camera, and what they do with it, was far more important than the camera itself.

The bike that makes me happy is the right bike for me. Reading about the latest and greatest gear I could buy to make me faster and better is not going to make me happy with my bike. Reading and looking at pictures of people out in the world enjoying their bikes, that makes me happy.

This is a really good thread. I appreciate everyone here, sharing your experiences with us. You make me happy.

We took the tandem out today for 41 miles, our first ride of the year. Just a quick pop out to Concord for lunch.

Arlington's section of Great Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary:





This must have been a bridge built when the RR line was put in. Unless you stop and notice you could completely miss this small piece of history.



At a quick stop in Lexington I spotted this Gran Prix, same color as our tandem, original components except for the Sora FD, the pedals, and the seatpost (turned backwards with the saddle pushed all the way back on the rails).



Stopped for lunch on Concord, had to take a selfie.

I've been taking short rides on Citi Bike. The bikes are tanks, but they're well suited to dirty slush.

Now the streets are clear, so I took my own bike for the first time in a long time. I just rode to a music recital on the upper east side, 4-1/2 miles each way. Traffic was heavy for a Sunday, but I had fun.

I guess my ride today was about as far as you can get from Tom's vibrant Times Square photo.

I've been riding almost every Sunday for the last 25 years with a small group of scruffy local Mountain Bikers who call ourselves the Forest Knolls Freewheelers. Most of us are fungavores so our winter rides often include a mushroom hunt. This week, on a soggy ridge near Point Reyes, we were very successful.

Great pics guys! I am jealous: Time Square, mushroom hunts, and all the picturesque rural scenery... I really miss living in Sonoma County. I did another exploratory ride of the Fullerton Loop today, according to google the whole thing is about 10-12 miles, I've explored maybe 5-6 miles. I decided to take off the slicks and put on some random knobbies I had laying around. They were too wide for the fenders, so those had to go too. They were way too aggressive for the pavement, but I was more than glad to have them on some parts of the trail since the rains have washed out a lot of areas and piled up very fine sand in others. There are nice parts of the trail, I'll just have to remember to take more pictures of the scenery next time instead of only bike shots.

Took the old Raleigh on the Sulphur Mountain Gravel Ride today (above Ojai, CA). 44 miles, 3200" climb, 10 miles of dirt and gravel fire roads.

Took the old Raleigh on the Sulphur Mountain Gravel Ride today (above Ojai, CA). No big deal, just a friendly club ride, 44 miles, 3200' climb, 10 miles of dirt and gravel fire roads, better than 10% in many places. The view from the top was spectacular, the Channel Islands out to the west, fire area all around from the recent Ventura fires. Most of my friends were on mountain bikes or hybrids, I was on the only road bike, and for sure the only vintage Raleigh. So glad I put the hill friendly gears on it. The old Raleigh never skipped a beat (after two flat tires on a easy Malibu run last week). The conditions closely duplicate the Eroica Ca, short version, but has tougher hills than the route in Paso Robles. I took off the toe clips, and used mtn SPDs. Wish they were allowed at the real Eroica. 48° at the start, 60ish at the finish, great day to ride. Good times.

This past Saturday was beautiful, and I took a rare opportunity of a day to myself to hit the Oakland hills near my home. I just swapped out the saddle on the Univega to a standard B17, and I was really pleased.

Last time I was in Tempe (a couple years ago) I was amazed at the Salt River improvements. The bike trail, parks and reservoir are awesome, as are all the new buildings (particularly the arts center) on the south bank.

Your last photo seems to warn against locking your bike next to the trail for an extended period of time

The crazy thing is, the current dam and the buildings in the next two pictures were all built in the last 3 or 4 years.

Today was overcast and grey and bit windy but when it's 50F in the northeast in January, it's time to ride! Just short of 20 miles exploring coastal Manhattan north of Central Park. First up the Hudson River Greenway for a few miles then cross town to the Harlem River. North along the water for a while, then followed 10th Avenue up to Inwood. The park has some nice trails that rise high above the Hudson, the back to the Greenway south to push against the headwind home.
