I'm working on a lot of older bikes recently, and I never seem to have enough rim strips in the proper size. I've used quality gaffer's tape for rim tape successfully, but grew weary of cutting or tearing it into the narrow widths needed. So I just bought a bunch of rolls of the stuff in 1/2" (13 mm) and 3/4" (18 mm) widths in 180 ft lengths, so each roll should do about 25 rims.



And I know that buying this stuff in colors is pointless because it's going to spend its life buried under an inner tube, but hey, they were all the same price, so why not. And I got all of this for about the same price as 7-8 rolls of specialty cloth rim tape like Velox or Zefal.

Due to a lag bolt going through my rim, used the Bontrager warranty no questions asked period to get a new Bontrager Aeolus Pro37V, rim strip, and Pirelli Cinturato Allroad 40mm.

My first foray into electronic shifting with the LTwoo ER9 electronic groupset. I was able to choose between 10/11/12 speed and opted to go with a lightweight all-steel 12 speed 11-34t cassette (sub 250g). The total cost for the front/rear derailleurs, cables, battery holder, shifters and hydro calipers+hoses was $350 w/tax and shipping. It's crazy how affordable bike parts are going with alternative components.

I read that LTwoo won't release the "blue edition" until later this summer. Though the rumor is that LTwoo has done silent revisions on the production line, so the current batch of groupsets should be okay. Mine came with the upgraded spring loaded battery holder and even the jockey wheels appear different from the promotional photos.

Many of the ER9/X users have been applying dielectric spark plug grease around the connectors to give it moisture protection. I also brushed on a healthy dose of rubber cement around the connectors as a-non permanent adhesive seal and then applied the dielectric grease over that. I'm hoping that should be enough to protect the connection ports. Though I don't ride in the rain much and I still have a back-up Ultegra mechanical bike just in case. I'm really impressed by the app fine-tuning features, replaceable batteries, cassette size flexibility and overall performance. At this price point, this really opens up electronic shifting to more people.

I have a 2012 Dahon Mu P8 that I plan to upgrade next month after a metric century ride at the end of the month. Along with changing out the OEM 8spd drivetrain to a 11spd SRAM setup, I’ll be replacing select aluminum parts with a few carbon fiber components from LitePro & converting the front to mechanical disc brake (rear remains V brake). Of course, replacing the sturdy box wheels with aero double walled aluminum wheels.

If 2 TPU tubes are fast, 3 should be even more fasterer. IDK if you ever tried TPU tubes before, but they are faster. I forget the exact number, but maybe 5-10 watts and a bit of weight. IIRC, when I was building my budget weight-weenie bike, the weight savings was close to 1/2 lb from TPU tubes...considering they were cheap tubes from Amazon, that was by far the most cost-effective part on that bike. Those numbers might be meaningless to some, but it does have a noticeable speed difference across a large ride.

....a New Bike...
Been looking/considering a new bike with Disc brake wheels in spite of a silly overabundance of bikes dating back to the Mid 70's. All of which I rode/raced...
Most are quite obviously 'well-ridden', a few still quite visually easy on the eyes...
But having ridden some newer bikes (some with E-shifting), I have vacillated with adding to the stable/quiver; especially since I got on the 'gravel' thing (new bikes there...) and LOVE it... (more on gravel later...)
Anyway, decided I really didn;t want/need E-shift, but did want Carbon wheelset and bit more Aero. Liked the very clean look of internal cables.
And having now ridden/owned a 1/2 dozen Spec Tarmacs & Roubaix (ALL of which I love...but all are predominantly BLACK with trim color, 4 Tarmacs, 2 Roubaix), I wanted a change...
So, long story shorter ( but still a bit wordy... LOL!)
I present - Trek Emonda SL5 2023, 56, Blue/Iridescent Dark Blue, !05 mec 11 spd, Hydro Brake, and adequate (but not carbon) wheels...
very nice ride, quite stiff (feels close to my '86 Cannondale SR900...super stiff ! )

EDIT: The Paint looks a lot of Black, close up it is quite a dark blue, and when in Bright/Sun light it has a beautiful, bright iridescent brigh blue flashing, very much like a deep 'Mica' effect.. really like that it's not a 'fade', prefer the hard border of color block. name decal could be quite a bit more understated... oh well... no matter...

For wheels, I'm really liking my new Winspace HYPER wheels. The free hub is not super loud, just loud enough to let walkers that I'm approaching.

The Winspace HYPER 45 wheels are on sale. Also, it looks like the CYCLISTSHUB10 10% coupon is working.

saddle setback. The seat tube is 73.5, I have very long legs for my height.... 6'3" legs on a 5'3" torso... LOL! The setback is 7.2, so actually a bit 'forward of my normal 'road'. BITD, I used 7 for crits... LOL! But being forward helps with spin... which I need to work on... ever since my health challenges these past few yrs, I've dropped comfortable cadence from 90's to low 80's - which I need to work back up. So, yeah, maybe I should push forward for a few months...
less gear size, more cowbell ! LOL !
