I'm hoping this week won't be a total bust. Due to heavy rains and also not having the company car available for some meetings, I haven't been able to ride at all this week so far. I'm way off my usual February total, barely cracking 200 miles for the month, when usually I'm closer to 300 miles.

Woke up this morning and opened the curtains to discover it had snowed overnight. Didn't know it was supposed to snow.

About 2" fell. The ground was warm so the heavily traveled roads were mostly slush. The lightly traveled roads had a layer of ice on the bottom where the compacted snow re-froze.

Between the snow and the stiff headwind it was slow riding to work. But I made it.

52F, wet from overnight storms, raining, strong headwind - other than that pretty nice ride! The trails was strewn with debris but that just makes me pay more attention. It's supposed to get much colder by this afternoon with 20+ mph winds but looks like they'll be crosswinds. Happy March 1!

Was a pleasant ride in today. There was no rain, but the road and bridge was wet. I anticipate some light rain on and off later on. But its supposed to go up to 70F so I don't care. Shorts, short sleeve jersey and hairy legs for the win! BTW, I just pulled the trigger on a new pair of Louis Garneau Milan shoes at performancebike.com:



Can't beat them for $50. Going old school with laces and all.

I forgot to record yesterday evening's ride from work to rehearsal. I get annoyed when I do that. I did record the ride from rehearsal to home. Despite the predictions, I had rain on neither of the rides.

I felt so dead this morning when I woke up today that I decided not to ride. I push myself pretty hard when I ride in.

40F, drizzle; going home last night on the MUP I was catching up to a dog-walker and my bell got muffled in the bar tape so I called out 'on your left' so he headed to his left and his dog took its retractable leash over to the right stringing the leash across the trail gutter to gutter. Anyway, no problem stopping and waiting for him to get control of his situation.

54F this morning on the GPS. weather app said it was 58F. it was probably at home but dropped as I rode in.


we have the winds today 20-30 mph avg and gusts to 45mph and the potential for thunderstorms during my commute home time. I might just get a ride home today. Wife is on standby for a rescue if considered dangerous.

Where I work and live, this is not entirely implausible. Not with my bum ticker, but for someone in better condition, it would be nbd to carry a little plastic kayak or SUP down to Snowberry Creek and paddle down and across to the Sac State aquatic center at Nimbus. It would shave off more than a mile as the crow flies but not sure if the lower speeds would eat the savings. Would get an upper body workout instead of the usual bike legs. Wonder if the aquatic center has lockers or something you could store the boat. Or maybe hide it in the woods!

I'm sure they don't do that every day. As I often report, it's mighty windy on the Hudson River. The river is at least a mile wide. And it gets cold in the winter.

Still, it's fun to imagine crossing in a kayak. I would certainly try it once.

-8*C and 50 km/h tailwind. Whoo hoo! Had to turn around to switch bike with studs at the end of the street. Thin layer of snow, and possibly ice warranted this.

I did see another gentleman riding, rather slowly with no lights at all, and in dark clothing. This was 6AM, so still very dark out. As I passed him I was tempted to say something to him, but didn't.

Curious whether you would say something if you encountered someone like that.

It was 45F and windy as all hell. Should be better albeit colder later on. I met a new commuter, Ben, on the bridge and had a nice chat. He prefers to not go down Riverside Drive in Manhattan after NY Presbyterian hospital. I actually haven't rode it in a while but I can see why he didn't like the close calls with car on that road. I had one a while ago after a rain and needed to take a little more of the road to avoid it. A guy in a car must have come within inches of me trying to pass. I caught him at the next red light and yelled at him. Life in the big bad city, I guess.

Early morning heart appointment seemed like a good idea at 3 PM when I was scheduling it. Not so much when my alarm went off at 4:45 AM this morning.

Nice dark ride to the hospital. Snowing again this morning, but at least the temp was a reasonable 23°F and the wind had yet to really pick up. I was hoping to get away with riding my hybrid, but when I saw the snow on the ground I knew I wouldn't be able to see where the icy patches were and opted to take the winter bike.

Worst part was when I arrived at the hospital at 6 AM I was the first one to arrive at that building. I stood around for about five minutes when a nurse walked in. I told her that I was here for my 6 AM appointment and she said, "I wonder why they scheduled you that early? We don't start any appointments until 6:45." Ugh. I could have slept another 45 minutes, which would have been nice with this mild cold I'm fighting.

They actually worked me in around 6:30 and I was at the office by 7 AM. An hour early, but I didn't really have time to ride home and back to work. I'll just try and take off a little early this afternoon.

COLD.. 27 degrees! Funny wearing shorts a couple days ago. The winds going to a PITA tonight again. Those NW winds always hits me at the worst and dangerous locations.

Ooh, tail wind this morning! Not just a little one, either, but enough that I had no wind noise in my ears when I was cruising along at top speed (which might have been approaching 20 mph). But only when I was going in that direction... the rest of the time, cross winds, kinda hard to handle. Still... nice ride.

Nope. It could be deliberate for all I know, or special circumstances. There was one guy who posted here, who handed out cheap tail lights. Everyone appreciated it, but he'd see them later on - no lights.

I left an hour early last night, when the local tornado warning on wundermap just touched my route. There was no issue then and it must have missed us entirely because there was no debris this morning, no more than usual anyway. Oddly, fewer people are out this morning than yesterday.

Colder, stiff headwind made it worse. Going to be an even bigger challenge tomorrow according to the forecast. So, taking that into account, today's ride was nice.

Last three days, it was a race to see what would get to work first: bike with me on it or the rain. (For the record, I was 1-1-1, chickened out yesterday.)


So today was a nice change, clear, cool, pretty good north wind was a tailwind most of the way in. Hope the wind dies down before tonight, though! Strange thing was that there was so little traffic, I don't think schools have their spring break for a couple more weeks.

The lanes on Riverside Dr are narrow, and it's a twisty street, but traffic isn't really that heavy, is it? I just take a lane and let people go around me. Though I don't need Riverside often any more, since I take the Hudson River Greenway. That's reachable from the bridge, and it's very low stress since it has no motor traffic.
