62.58 miles, 3,988 feet of climbing.

This is an out and back loop on a MUP that I do. The top of the ride is at Big Creek State park where there is a small store that sells gatorade and ice cream bars; not a bad way to finish up the first half of the ride. It's a really pretty ride that winds long a river. There has been a lot of prairie restoration so there is good eco diversity along the ride.

Plus rode one of my favorite older bikes, a 1984 Trek 610:

Got out midnight for a hot and humid 16 miler on grocery grabber. QUIET is the operative word at that time and oh so nice.

Rode the the gang this morning and all was going well until I started hearing a rubbing sound on the left pedal down-stroke. We stopped to refill our water bottles so I checked everything out and notices some play on the left pedal axle. Dropped the speed down to 10-14 mph and hoped that it got me back to the van. A total of 24 miles, which is better than zero. At least I finished off the month with a bang. Got my back-to-back 1,000 mile month in with room to spare.

18.4 more relaxed cruising miles on the Sirrus (flat bar) Saturday, 22.4 on the freshly waxed and lubed Roubaix today. I Turtle waxed all 4 bikes, cleaned and lubed the chains on 3. I'll wax the 81" long trike another day when I have the energy.
Put the new (well, used, but in much better shape than the ones on the bike) 53/39T chain rings on the Tarmac. The semi-restoration project is almost complete. A new Ultegra 12-30 cassette and the replacement Continental tire from Amazon and I'm done. A little wax on the 10 year old frame and it looks great.

Went back to the Hastings Trail again today, this time with my friend Ian, and his old red Dunelt. The skies were cloudy for much of the ride, but it never even threatened to rain. It was a nice, medium length ride, with some interesting scenery:

Sculpture is big in Hastings, Minnesota:

The sun did pop out from behind the clouds briefly, so I shot this:

Another excellent ride! I'm getting spoiled this season...

My riding buddy joined me in a 20mi ride on one of my strava courses. Without any plans prior, we settled in a well disciplined paceline. He is a young 45 and rides a Cannondale Criterium Series framed racer as I do. He pulled the middle 7 in his top gear at a leisurely 60rpm but we scooted along at an easy 18-20mph. When my turn came I told him to pull up tight and crank hard that last 6 miles with the wind at our backs pushing us along at a zippy 22mph. I refused to break stride and he stuck to my wheel like a pro. I hollered back when we hit the last mile and turned into the streets of the neighborhood. Our legs were fried as we sprinted beyond the speed limit before finishing. Great mid-season ride.

42 Screamer miles today on a club ride with my favorite stoker. Lots of flat roads and some rollers with a couple of modest hills. Also, a section of roadway unexpectedly rough - so rough it contributed to our dropping the timing chain for the first time on this bike - 6 years and 6,000+ miles.

Slow and steady

3rd Sunday run of 15+ miles. Everyday starts with a nice 5 miler at sunrise. Plus doing all grocery shopping by bike. Life is good.

Rode with the Kiwanis Bikes group (of 4) today. Three of us are in our early 70s, the one youngster (late 20s) zoomed past us going up the hills. So at one point in the 22.8 mile ride where it's down, flat, up, flat, up some more I kicked the Allez up a couple of notches into 8th gear and zipped past him at 29mph, then on up the incline at 20mpg. I didn't know I could ride that fast. It was a good day on my favorite bike.

18 miler pre-ride and found 13 cents. Showed up for the Tuesday AM ride and only FL. State Trooper Bruce was there in a less than ideal condition. We agreed to take things slow and do so then at mile 20 he pulls off to head home. Nose to the grind stone I plug away turning into the driveway after 50.15 non stop miles for a total of 68. Putting a new chain and 12/23 cassette on before next ride.

24.2 miles on the Tarmac. Pretty much fast, this bike. I postponed swapping out the 12-25 cassette for the 12-30. Looking (on ebay) for a lighter set of wheels. Bidding on Friday. If I get them, these heavier Bontrager wheels will go on the Sirrus. That'll lighten the load on it considerably.

Next week will be one year since I began cycling, and wanted to get a century ride in. Well, today was the day, 117 miles and over 5,000 ft of climbing and almost 14 mph average.

Fifty miles with a riding buddy who is also 71 years old, to Highline Lake State Park. We took it easy and stopped on the way home for a small calzone at Fruita, Colorado's best lunch stop for bikers, Hot Tomato Pizza. Even though it was hot (somewhere between 95 and 100), we had a great time. Strava suffer score 143; my personal enjoyment score, about 350.

And the jersey was a gift from my sister, who lives in Salem, Oregon.

19 miles today as a bike commuter. On the pm ride home I was able to get cat 6 points by overtaking a couple of other guys on bikes. (Raises arms in air!) seldom see anyone else riding on my routes home.

I'll check it out and see how the knee and leg is doing. Pulled a muscle in my leg trying to kick the bike out from underneath me on a fall I took this morning. Don' know how it will do on Sugarloaf.

Met my buddies Frank and Steve at the park this morning for a ride that didn't turn out too well. Just as we got to the loop, we tagged onto Amanda Coker's group and rode with her for almost three laps before the three of us broke off. Shortly afterwards, I don't know what my buddy Steve was thinking but he made a right turn when we were turning left and he and Frank go down. I also went down behind them trying to avoid running into them. Frank's bike is FUBAR so we ended up walking to the parking lot for about 1/4 mile. Other than torn bar tape, I can't find anything wrong with my bike. I came through without as much as a scrapped knee. Today's ride ended up being just over 24 miles. What hurts most is that my wife rode more miles than I did.

Only 17 miles on the Tarmac today. I decided to follow a bike path friend downtown to view the Hot August Nights classic cars. Hate that route, the bike path hasn't been maintained in 15+ years, but I went anyway. Got one of those insidious goathead stickers in the sidewall of the rear tire. I've gotten pretty good at swapping tubes and thank goodness for CO2 bottles. But I'm down to carrying only one and I don't ride with a pump. Might be time to add a little weight (2nd CO2 bottle) to the underseat pac.

24.2 miles today on the Tarmac. The more I ride this beautiful machine, the more I like it (even if it is 10 years old).
The restoration is coming along nicely. I need a lighter set of wheels, then the new cassette, I'll stick with the (farily new) Shimano 105 shifters and derailleurs. Shifts well.
