Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This coronavirus business is really suffering from a lack of useful information.

So we have these two corona positive cases in town, both dx at the local hospital but not admitted. Meaning the affected individuals are not too sick.

Big question is: community acquired or not? Why not tell us that? Would be hugely helpful in giving us an idea of how widespread the infection might already be in our town. Which in turn would be hugely helpful in giving me an idea how responsible it would be for any of us to leave town to go work in LA somewhere.

So I go to the CA Dept of Public Health website and I find a map of counties in which community acquired coronavirus has been diagnosed. The map was updated yesterday and LA county is not indicated as a county in which community acquired infection has been diagnosed. But... was the map updated before or after our first case was announced? How about case 2 which was announced today- community acquired or not? Big difference in how much of a risk I am to others if say our two cases are people returned from Italy and self-quarantining since their return. Vs people who were at Peet’s yesterday morning when I was there.

The lack of guidance on anything is just annoying. The last thing I want to do is shut my own hospital down by spreading disease to everyone. A little bit of info would actually be useful.

Vail resorts are closing up the ski areas for a bit. All the folks that are under self quarantine, really might have to self quarantine.

I went out and did a 2x20 workout, and I really don't remember being as cold as I was on the bike as I was today. 2x20' is a miserable thing in itself, and then adding that nonsense on top of it, makes for a brutal time on the bike.

I would assume there are a lot of diagnosed people all over. How else would we get such a scattered map of confirmed cases?

I am not sure what you’re trying to say.

Theres a difference between community acquired disease and disease that was acquired from outside the community.

If someone acquired the disease in our community, that means there are likely a great many undiagnosed cases in our town and it means my chances of having been exposed already and possibly currently infected/infectious is higher.

If someone has acquired the disease outside of our community, there’s less of a chance that I’ve personally been exposed, particularly if they knew they might have been exposed elsewhere and limited their own contact with others until they could be tested.

Its a big difference. If I want to be a responsible part of not spreading this disease, giving me this kind of info would be helpful.

I don't think there's a way to know the scale of infections until the testing starts to catch up in the next week or two.
