This being almost like a Park might make a difference. In the natural world a raccoon out in daylight usually means they have rabies. It means they can't hunt at night very good. I would still be careful and give him/her plenty of room.

Yeah, I don't get too close but also not too worried about rabies. This one comes out just about sunset and heads for the junction to hunt for nutbar crumbs and half melted leftovers stuck in the wrappers.

Last year before the new trash cans he/she would do the head first dive into the trash cans.

This little guy was just hanging out by the bike repair station on Southgate. He is very much alive and just as much deadly as the larger ones.

For us cyclist, if you see a snake on the road. Stop or slow and squirt your water bottle at them and persuade them to move along off the road so they won't get smushed. Thanks

I did UpSouth/down North/up north/down south... it's like summiting w/o the wall. Northgate is a bumpy descent still.

Haven't been on the mountain since last August. I don't remember this slide just downhill from the ranger kiosk being here last year. Looks like a good-sized chunk went down. Pretty impressive looking when coming downhill. Has this been here for a while or is this new from the past winter? Maybe it was here last year but is just maybe a little bigger and more noticeable this year?

It's been 'there' for a while now.. slowly growing. Rainstorm 2017 didn't help either.

If you have been on the Mtn you might have seen these new Bike Repair Stations. They can be handy if you need something. I have used them to make saddle adjustments because I had forgotten to grab the multi-tool out of the other seat bag.

I have seen the ones at the summit, Junction, and Southgate and I have heard there will be more popping up at the Mtn bike entrances too.

Major kudos to Volney Spalding, whose Eagle Scout project this was. That means that this 15-17 year old (most likely age) saw the need, designed the project, got the permits and materials and mobilized the labor (probably with some help from other Troop 36 Scouts but almost certainly mostly from himself) to get this started and get this done.

I do not know Volney or his troop, but have a passing familiarity with what it takes to become an Eagle Scout. For a teenager, it is not a small thing.

Is it really hot on Diablo nowadays? Bunch of friends planning to hit up Diablo on July 8-9 weekend and I'm not sure what time would be best. Never climbed it in the heart of the summer so wondering.

Well, that is the weekend of the DeathRide so the Mtn should have little less cyclist than that weekend. But there will be many others that ride the mtn.

Where are you planning on starting North or South side? As for the good old summer heat, it is hard to say. If we have a heat wave that weekend it could be a warm ride even early am. It would good to get a start before or no later that 8:30. Not sure of your friends speed uphill, I always plan on 2 hours to the top with stops at the Junction and waiting for slower riders.

Me, I really like to climb the Mtn later in the day. My after work rides up the Mtn are amazing. Start out warm at the base of the Mtn but usually gets cooler as you climb. NO traffic and view from the top near sunset is one not to be missed.



Now for a little safety announcement. Even thou park has added double yellow lines and another safety improvements. Cars continue to pass at some really bad spots. Be Careful!!
