@Edonis13, what do you make of the fact that you lose power but not cadence? That's strange to me because when the power meter fails, you usually lose both.

The only thing I can think of is I do have a Garmin GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor on the bike, but I don't know if it would default to that if it lost cadence data from the power meter.

My experience has been that this does not happen. It was one of the frustrations that I had with Garmin. I'd be connected to a seperate cadence sensor but if the power meter failed, neither the Edge 510 nor the Edge 1000 would default to picking up that cadence data, I'd just lose power & cadence together.

Interesting that your experience is different, I don't know what to make of that.

I get data drops on my Garmin when I'm near utility / electric poles.

My experience with Garmin has been good (although I busted a pod on my Vectors). Being a reader of their forums it seems like they have poor quality control and there are a lot of bad units out there.

Speaking of which, I just got an Egde 1000 for the advanced metrics for Vector Pedals. So far I like it, until I remember how much it cost (also definitely not something to race with).

Since you're a local guy, this is on the New York Bump in Fair Oaks.
That's a solid punch hill for repeats.

Mine drops are pretty similar, but with 2-3 per repeat. I'll have to go back and check to see if I've had any with the power2max on the TT bike. I don't recall having any, but not sure.

Nice deal. The rims may be wider than your other wheels.

I get data drops when I'm near high voltage lines and electric sub-stations. The weird thing is, everything but speed drops. No power or cadence. I know a few guys who have the same issue.

@Edonis13, many power meters will read zero if cadence drops too low. Power = torque x cadence so if the cadence drops low enough that the device is trying to calculate multiple power data points without getting an updated cadence value, the output would be meaningless. Maybe that's what happened on your hill. Depending on how cadence is being calculated, the device may have reported some minimum cadence value, or a doubled value, rather than reporting zero cadence along with zero power.

Speed comes from the GPS. Power and Cadence come from ANT+. Different frequencies.

The power meter has an internal cadence sensor, no magnets, and they claim it's accurate down to 30rpm. The 60's I was at should not have been a problem and hasn't been a problem in the past on other climbs even when my cadence dropped lower into the 50's.

Not saying this is what happened, but it's possible an actual cadence of 30 was reported as 60 with no power calculation. I have seen that on steep climbs on my SS.

Updated my firmware from 3.4 to 3.5 on my 510 and did some efforts on my ride yesterday where I was getting power drops on previous rides. No identified power drops, but I'll keep an eye on it. My 510 is an out of warranty refurb replacement (my first 510 got ran over when it fell into the street), so not sure if that is part of the problem or not.

If buying a used SRM, would it be a good idea to get it serviced by SRM? Are there any compromises with an FSA SRM over, say, a DA9000 unit (besides battery life)?

If it was serviced within the last year, I'd be ok with it as-is but it's up to you. The service is not expensive and then you'll know everything is working to spec.

The FSA crank is heavier and uses older electronics to keep the cost down, but it's still an SRM. It's a good crank, though. I have the same crank with a Stages that I will occasionally swap onto my race bike with Di2, shifts fine.

tongue and cheek, but they do have great customer service. i have been on a quarq since late 2009, when my cinqo died in 2012<?>, it was replaced with a riken. when that riken died last week, it was replaced with another riken. turnaround time door to door was 6 days. with warranty and service like that, despite whether it should have died or not, once you're "in" on a quarq, it's hard to get "out."

did you try to reboot? if it's a riken, you just take out the battery, put in a couple pennies, close the battery compartment, wait about 5 seconds, then open up and replace coins with battery and try again.

The best customer service is the one you never use. I've done the swap out dance with them 4 or 5 times in the past, but this one has gone "strong" since 2012. Granted, I only ride a fraction of the hours I used to ride.

I'll try the penny trick, but it was also really humid this morning, and as I recall, water was the thing that made those things fail.

@kensuf - both of my dead quarqs were related to water, but not run of the mill humidity, rather riding in a deluge.
