Retro roadies- old frames with STI's or Ergos

I'm very tempted to go STI on my '81 Trek 950 bike this winter. One concern is keeping the fit AS IS. The hoods of brifters (or aero levers in general) have more effective reach than old-school non-aero Campy levers. Do y'all recommend compensating with different handlebars? I'm reluctant to switch out the 80mm Cinelli stem.

Older Shimano STI shifters have a longer reach and but the older Campag Ergo shifters didn't veer too far from the shape of older brakes levers.
The old 8 and 9 speed shifters give me this appearance...
Campag kept the shape more closer to a standard brake lever

I think you're comparing Ergo to aero levers. Non-aero don't have much of a hood at all.
Any idea about the newer Campy and Shimano hoods?
I'd like to go Campy, but their cassettes only go up to 29t whereas my ****** demands the climbing you get from a 32t (with 34t up front!)

Yep, early STI's look bulbous, like an Orca coming up for a seal. Still, hard to beat 9sp DA STI's for pretty pretty.
The newer Shimano are more compact, as are the SRAM's.
I think Campy was dead on with the early Ergos, and their shifters look better a bit lower on the bar.
The early Ergos fit the same after an upgrade, whereas some of the newer stuff, Campy included, needs about a 10mm shorter stem, for me.

I finally finished my first submission yesterday, my '89 Fuji Ace. I took it for a test ride this morning and it was fantastic. Light, fast and sleek. The only issue that I encountered that my LBS helped me with was redishing the rear will a bit to the drive side. I had redished other wheels in the past but this was a new wheel set and I wanted to be certain that it was done perfectly. I will list the components that I used a bit later on but for now here are some maiden voyage shots.

Really nice bike! I like the black on black theme. Looks like you're running 105 5800 10 speed but what are the wheels? They look like old hard anodized Mavics with new hubs. Nice touch! I might consider flipping the stem over if it were mine but I'm not riding in the Bronx NYC

@eastbay71 thanks! I used the Shimano 105 5800 11 speed groupset, new Mavic Open pro rims laced to Ultegra hubs. I got the dark gray version to match the aesthetic. The threadless adapter, stem and bars (42cm) are Deda. The 28mm Gatorskins are perfect and the Selle Italia Max Flite is the best modern saddle I have tried. I took it for a 55 mile ride today and it performed flawlessly! Thank you to all of you on this thread who gave advice and inspiration.

Woah those hoods look huge! I'm trying decide which groupset to get for my Retro Roadie. The 11-speed Shimano 5800/6800 stuff gets rave reviews. I was leaning towards Shimano because I can run 11-32t cassette. Whereas Campy my only option is the Athena Triple or a 12-29t with 34/50 compact double. But now I'm not sure with those massive hoods! I wonder if SRAM has a smaller hood?

@ppg677 haha The hoods are big but it doesn't bother me. The hills around here make the 11-32t cassette and the compact crank great. I am a really adept hill climber but this setup makes it so smooth. What is your project bike?

I don't mind downtubes and have been riding it with a new triplizer i bought this summer and indexed 6-speed. But I know I shift less frequently with the downtubes and I need everything I can get in group rides. I like my other STI-equipped vintage Trek. Plus while the Campy side pulls stop decent, I've had a couple close calls where maybe I do want more stopping power of modern stuff.
I love the frame though.

Current-gen SRAM hoods are a bit flatter-longer-narrower diameter, though still not as long as 11s Shimano-- new Sram may actually be closer to old-campy than new campy is...
Ergonomics on all the current groups is great, IMO, esp Campy. Do you have a shop nearby you could go to and just fondle / test-grip the levers? That'd be the easiest way to find a favorite.

Has anyone used the Shimano 7-speed Tourney STI shifters? I'm not sure whether to give these (or the Microshift) shifters a try and keep using my freewheel wheels or whether to upgrade to a new drivetrain requiring new wheels, etc.
