To top off an unusual year it's been an unusual autumn for me. Over the past few decades I've developed some pretty pronounced varicose veins in both legs. The surgeon was shocked when he saw them. But they never bothered me. He was very bothered about the likelihood of blood clots. So we've taken care of all that over the past couple months. Last bicycle ride was Columbus Day. Nothing since as the procedures were so close together. All done now. Christmas Eve was my first ride, though only down to the mail box and back a few times. Need to return slowly. Christmas Day was the first time on my trainer, 30 minutes.
Today was Boxing Day so I had to do something. Quite cold and refreeze/black ice all over the place. And, as I had stopped in early October I've had no acclimation to the cold and today did not get above 32deg. Not good but rode down to the mail box again (100 yards each way) a few times. Humbling huh? But better than nothing. Starting to climb back up to where I was in September.
And as it's winter, Babe, The Blue Oxen climbed down from the loft and we played together. Good bike for foul winter conditions but she is like an old Scranton beer wagon horse compared to the thoroughbreds and warmbloods I have in the line up. But they don't like ice.

Ha in Zwift, people give you little “thumbs up” and when you get one, it gets tucked in your pocket. I haven’t quite figured out how to give out a thumbs up, not to mention I can’t quite see the screen well without my glasses, so people probably think I’m a jerk not giving one back.

Late post from yesterday, but I did a short 16 mile ride with a buddy to meet our wives for coffee. 35 degrees at the start but it was a beautiful morning.

Family, schedules and weather have kept me off the bike for nearly a month - but today’s ramble out to Hodges and back on the Mercian fixed-gear was a delightful return!

Forecast was for 49-50 degrees but only got to about 42 with some wind. Still got 25 miles in on the Pinarello and its new wheels before the chill seeped too far into my bones.

Well, 2020 has come to an end for me for riding. Was 48 degrees today with some wind so off on the Nishiki Maxima I went for 20 or so miles. It was a fun ride until 2 minutes from home. As I was coming down a slight downhill 2 minutes from home in our neighborhood, one neighbor's dog decided to take chase. He had been a problem earlier in the year but they had gotten their electric fence fixed. Well, pavement work in November on the corner I was quickly approaching took out part of that fence and the neighbor hasn't fixed it. Out on the road comes the black lab. I yelled his name a couple of times to try and slow him down but it didn't work. As he got to within 6 inches or so of my leg and growling loudly I reached down with my right hand for the water bottle and hit him square between the eyes. Then all hell broke loose ....
He either hit the back of my bike or the front drifted off the side of the road (the dog had been pushing me over to the right). The handlebars pivoted violently and, at 20 mph or so, I slammed into the pavement. The left hip hit first and the then the head impacted hard into the asphalt. The bike spun and we pitched into a 5 foot deep ditch with a foot of water or so in it. Not sure if I lost any consciousness but as soon as I realized the bike and I were sitting in water I grabbed the top tube with my left hand and, with blood pouring off my face, scrambled up the bank. I knew it was not a good situation when I got back to the road and texted my wife to call 911 for an ambulance. My left hip really hurt and both hands were numb. With prior C5-C6 cervical fusion that really bothered me. 7 hours later the numbness has finally gotten better.
In the end, I got my first ever ride in an ambulance. Those guys did a great job warming me up. Lying on cold asphalt and partially wet I was shaking pretty fierce. I was still able to crack some jokes in the hospital with the staff. I have 3 stitches above the left eye, mild concussion, a fractured pelvis and am really, really sore. I've never been through 15 rounds with Mike Tyson but I'm pretty sure it probably feels about as bad as I feel now. Non-weight bearing for awhile so I'll just have to get ready for 2021.

Got a little break in the weather we've been having here so I took a ride along the Susquehanna. Just a few days ago it crested over 25 feet due to the huge snow melt and heavy rain.
You can see the 25 foot mark on the stick closest to the river there. Fortunately the valley avoided severe flooding this time around. In 2011 the river crested over 41 feet, more than the levee was designed to hold, but it held. This valley was flooded badly in 1972, before the levee was in place. It has receded, but the river is still pretty high.

Nice short snow ride today just few miles on local roads really nice ride even with the snow. On a couple of inches of powder the Schwinn GSX rides super smooth and quit.

I've had a few weeks off the bike due to illness, and have just started back with a few short rides. My wife was on an early today at the medical centre where she works, so I took the chance to ride up to meet her at the end of her shift. The weather was quite cold and overcast at 8:30 when I left home, but after half an hour the breeze dropped off and the sun emerged.
I headed out of Weston over the old airfield, missing the worst of the traffic on the A371 by diverting through Locking village, then turned onto the lanes over the moor towards Puxton. There was a lot of water from recent rain on the roads - the moors are very flat and low lying wetlands - and mud around the farms made things a bit slippery in places.
My route went through Puxton and into Sandford, where I joined the Strawberry Line, heading north. Incidentally, Puxton has a medieval church with a leaning tower; the lean on the tower is due to the wet ground it's built on causing subsidence.
I followed the Strawberry Line to its end at Yatton railway station, and after a mile on main road turned onto the lanes around Kingston Seymour. More water and mud, but much more pleasant than the main road, and not a problem with decent mudguards fitted on the Peugeot.
A few miles more through the lanes and I arrived in Clevedon bang on time to meet my wife; the bike was in the car in two minutes and we were back in Weston by 10:30. A few pictures from the morning's ride are below - some of these were taken from the same places as some of the photos I posted in the summer, there's a bit of a difference!

After a spell of wet weather it was cold and dry on Monday so I started off in the morning for what was likely the last long COVID wandering of the year. I tried to take advantage trail systems as much as possible to avoid icy road shoulders.

The route I took was a lollypop out to Redmond nearly all on trails, returning via Union Hill back into the Lower Snoqualmie Valley on roads to Carnation. After a short stop lunch, I finished the ride back to North Bend on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail.
I'd guess about 50 of the 68 miles were on Trail. It was pretty foggy along Lake Sammamish and I rode carefully on the paved sections. Had one instance where both tires broke loose on an icy corner but was able to stay upright.
The sun finally warmed things up to the low 40's by the time I had to hit the roads over Union Hill and the riding was perfectly safe.

It's been cold here but I'm off of work until next Monday so I'm trying to take advantage of the time off to get some rides in.
Tonight we are supposed to get 5"-7" or snow which may really curtail riding for a while so I went out even though I really just wanted to stay inside where it was warm!

My best experience is not explain with ' where ' I can express it ' When '. Once I rode my bike around 4 in the morning with my buddy. It was dark and little scary. But has alot fun

A short 25 and damn, was it cold! But it was dry, and I hadn't ridden in two weeks. Rain began spitting the last 5 miles and I was lucky to get home and dry. The rains came about 30 minutes later!

It was cold again today, but I wanted to get one more ride in for 2020.
In Laurel Springs NJ, this was the summer home of the Good Gray Poet for a few years. He took mudbaths in nearby Laurel Lake. He spent his last years in Camden NJ. I may get a shot of his crypt and post it here sometime. Hmmm, maybe a thread, Famous Peoples' Graves and Your Bike.

Argh, schedules! Meant to post this yesterday! I got out on the Mercian for one last ride in 2020 before the projected heavy rains arrive. I rolled on through Hodges and down to Blue Jay Road, where it struck me that this is the latest area for people to buy large plots of land to build a personal castle, complete with much distance from other humans. Misanthropes - my kind of people! Anyway, it was a lovely day, worth stopping at the county line for a quick photo -
- before rolling on to have a late Festivus feats-of-strength moment on the climb up to Flatwood Road. I didn’t stall out though I was down to 4.5 mph near the top, punching the 70-in fixed with a left pedal inhale right pedal exhale. I thought about and rejected the 24-in gear and enjoyed the spin down the other side. On a whim I took John’s Creek road and saw yet another dilapidated building I hadn’t seen before -
- before emerging into Deadfall Road. There’s a long climb, but this time some helpful guy jumped out on the road with a Gator or something similar and towing a livestock trailer fragrant with that stuff we use to describe political promises. I held my breath and pulled up behind the rig and drafted off him for the rest of the climb, about a mile or more. I had never drafted of a livestock trailer before and I was glad it was unoccupied.
I made it home with 20.6 miles for the day and a big grin on my face.
