Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2 rides in one day? I want to be married to your wife!

I did manage to get a 35 mile ride in around central mass. Typical fall day around the area, cool air, the smell of burning oak, the bitter sweetness of knowing there won't be many more days like this left <sniff> <sniff>

When I came home from the first ride she had just woken up. We spent some time together, then she spent some time studying for her CPA exam and then went into work. I left for my ride after she left and got back while she was still gone. I'm going to meet her at the gym to soak in the hot tub in half an hour or so

Tandem ride, 34 miles, about 1500' of climbing, fast, even against the wind. Storm cells blew from west to east and caught us for about 15 minutes, but blew on and we rode back into the sun and dry road. The ride was brisk and was the highlight of the day (as most rides should be).

Tomorrow it's trainer-time.

I did a relaxed 26 miles with my girlfriend on Northern Branch Trail starting around chicago botanic garden. It was a beautiful fall day. Unreal colors. Nice trail, not very crowded and people riding were generally quite good, predictible cyclists. My girl used my alum bike (first road bike ride for her, she rides her hybrid quite a lot, she was quite quick and i think I get her hooked ). I enjoyed one of the first rides on my Tarmac, it was a blast. Perfect weather, prob. one of last weekends like this for Chicago

^ That trail looks wonderful. I do wish there were more trails around here. Riding for miles without fussing about cars (and getting to take in all the colors at this time of year) is a pleasure.

Just a hair short of 60 miles with the group of guys I typically ride with Sunday mornings (plus one, one of my students picked up at about mile 30 and held on for a valiant, but ultimately short-lived, ten miles). Beautiful fall weather in the Midwest... the trees were like a magenta & copper canopy for most of the ride.

Beautiful day, 26 miles on local streets and more rural backroads.

Short, fast and painful. I had a brief window of opportunity to get a ride in this afternoon, so I did my standard daily 17 miles and 1500 feet of climbing. It didn't start out fast, just a nice workout pace, but midway up the last 2 mile climb I was passed by two cyclists. The last mile of the climb eases back the gradient, so I was able to keep them within sight even though I was just doing a moderate tempo. They probably had 30 seconds on me by the top. At the top, one of the cyclists turned around, and by the time I reached the peak, the first rider was nowhere in sight, which meant he was hammering downhill at a nice clip. But that first few miles down were rather technical with sharp turns and blind s curves, and that got me thinking that since I knew the route well, perhaps I might be able to catch up to him, or simply catch sight of him. So off I went on the chase. Sure enough, around mile 3 I caught sight of him, and was gaining. Just before one of the steepest pitches down is a 200 foot length upward pitch, and it was along that stretch that I caught up and passed him. For the remaining several miles of down I continued a fast pace, and didn't turn around to see if I had company. At the bottom I stopped briefly for some water, but there was no sight of him. WTH.

78 miles solo, country roads, including about 5 miles of dirt.

Arlington->Georgetown->Maryland->White's Ferry->home

Damned if it didn't seem like the wind was in my face both heading West and again coming back East.

75.5 miles solo out to Roan Mountain state park.
One idiot minivan driver pulled right across in front of me. Apparently bicycles are required to stop at every intersection. He was impressed with my language.
Peaked my heart rate over 200. Scary to see that on the ole monitor.
Had a rear tire go low.
Had to stop half way up on one of my most challenging steep short hills due to overexertion of my heart.
15.5 mph average.
Wasn't pretty, but I did it.
