Yeah, see, that's the thing. The beer-drinking, bacon-eating costume-wearers are a minority of the participants in cyclocross, there are just as many who are there to race, but... so what? People having a good time their own way doesn't make it illegitimate. It's a big tent, and that you can wear a strange outfit and be silly or race hard and expect people to respect you and be cool to you either way is what people like about cyclocross. And it definitely doesn't make sense to say that people being dicks is the fault of people making a welcoming, chill race scene. That said, I've had things to say about those PNW weirdos in the past...

The point being, like I said, interest in wearing strange costumes is... variable. It really does get frustrating sometimes that people think PNW-style craziness is the only way that people do cyclocross. There's nothing wrong with what they do, really, but it's not the CX hotbed of the USA that some people think. The big races and most of the pros are from New England and some regions of the Midwest.

In non CX-related events, today I said "**** it, I can't take it anymore" and rode my bike into work today. It was FINE, I'm FINE, I'm so sick of being off the bike and it felt great. I'm seeing my orthopedist tomorrow, maybe I'll get the official clearance to ride, but I don't care anymore, my clavicle feels great. I think I'm going to get a talking-to from my wife, but I can take it. It's worth it.

Okay, it is a little CX-related. I rode my cross bike.

So, checked out a cross race last night (was told the course was more mountain bikey than cross). What a scene and people (spectators and racers) seemed to be having waaaay more fun than at a crit. Lots of beer, lots of screaming (positive things), a DJ with a sound system on a trike, more beer, etc.

Got a used 3T Stem off ebay for 30 bucks. Got it and the thing looks new.

If one were patient and diligent in their search a pretty good road bike could be built for under 1k.

Amen.

A little bit ago, maybe 2004 so maybe the prices aren't applicable, someone showed up at Bethel with a super light and reasonable bike (carbon frame, somewhat aero wheels, no ridiculous parts). I think it weighed in the 12-13 lbs range. Guy spend $1200 on it. Only thing is it took him a while to build it. He leveraged his position as a shop employee to snag good closeout deals, score some unwanted take off parts, and put together a sweet bike.

Heck I raced on take off cranks, pedals, derailleurs, and Ergo levers for about 3 years - it's when I went to 170 cranks because I couldn't afford anything except "free". A customer gave me his complete drivetrain when he went from 8s to 9s - derailleurs, cranks, shifters, his chain/cassette weren't usable. I managed to get a bunch of SPD-R pedals for free since they were impossible to clip out of and everyone who had them switched to something else (eventually I did too). I used them for a long time, close to 10 years, but I had to hit my shoe with my fist to unclip (or crash, seems that crashing unclipped them fine). Etc.

Cheap, good, fast. You can have two of them.

Streaming it on youtube to the phone. Not sure I can watch him ride around in a circle non-stop for an hour though. Will check in periodically.

My hylix saddle which was cheap and seemingly pretty good died fast! End of life yesterday when I noticed the shell was about 3/4 cracked through.

Okay, it is a little CX-related. I rode my cross bike.

My first surgeon told me I could do whatever I could tolerate from day 1 post surgery. That guy was confident in his plate-affixing skills!

Looks like Trek had an army of lemmings plaster logos all over the velodrome. Good thing, since they've been unemployed since 2010.

Nice job Jens.

Also: "The current record of 49.700 kilometers was established in 2005 by Czech rider Ondřej Sosenka."

Yeah, but I'm not plated or pinned this time around, I'm reliant on whatever sticky stuff my body has made over the last 6 weeks. Still, things have been very stable since day 1.
