in the late 50's I rode a dozen miles up to a swimming pool created by the outflow/spill-water from the city water-supply reservoir
Because it was fresh water and not treated, with clorine, like the city pools..

Some time around 8 or 9 years old, back in the 60's, I mysteriously got it in my head that I needed to learn to ride a bike. Not having one, I borrowed a neighbor kid's bike and obsessively commenced to teach myself.
A couple years later in Middle School I came across a biography of Eddy Merckx and the seeds that had been planted and sprouted years prior, suddenly bloomed.
Now looking back over the past ~50 years I cannot see myself as someone who did not have bike riding as a fundamental part of their make-up. It was never a "hobby" for me.
